Okay, I have a question and I'm going to pray this doesn't cause offense because I don't mean any. I cannot afford to use a calligrapher so I have 2 choices. Address my invites by hand (not looking forward to that and my penmenship is not great) or do it by computer. My question is... I am considering buying photo quality labels to adhere to my envelopes. Why is this not as good as printing them directly on the envelope? It will be sooooo much easier for me and I won't have to fear messing up an envelopes in a paper jam. Has anyone done this or is this an absolute no-no?

addressing my invites? By hand or computer?
That's what I'm doing. I purchased clear 11/3' by 4' Avery Labels. They work just fine. Also the Font I picked came out beautiful!!! I'm doing this for the same reason you are and I have gotten invites that were done like that. They looked great!!! So like myself for the time factor and ease, that's what i'll be doing. Good luck.

addressing my invites? By hand or computer? - KIT
Thanks...may I ask what font you are using? I'm considering either the clear or the photo quality. For some reason, my mom suggested this didn't look good compared to actually printing them directly on the envelope. I'm a meeting coordinator so I have experience with envelopes jamming etc. in the printer. I don't want to take the chance. Good Luck to you as well. :)

The font is Amazone BT
in Bold , size #18
then I picked dark blue color and the shadow effect. It looks neat!

Re: addressing my invites? By hand or computer?
I'd used Avery #8660 for the small domestic addresses and for addressing the inner envelopes.
I'd used Avery #5663 for the big/long domestic and foreign addresses. I'd used some of these for the inner envelopes for those long names or large households. We'd invited children of all ages to our wedding and I'd listed every child's name of the household on the inner envelope to make it more personal. For example, a family of 6 that that has 2 parents and 4 children (2 unmarried adult children and 2 young children) all their names are listed on the inner envelope. I'd used Avery #5663 for cases like this.
Plus, it sure bets writer's cramp or making mistakes and using white out to cover it up when reviewing it on the computer first before printing it out. The only problem that I've had is that I have deskjet printer and I have to wait for the ink on the labels to dry before putting it on the envelopes otherwise the ink will smudge.

Honestly, I think wedding invites should NOT have labels on them, I mean, IMO it doesn't look right (edited to fix sp mistake ;)) and takes away from the formality of the invite.. If you can't afford a calligrapher, then I would just manually feed them and print them out on teh printer..

I must agree w/Marcella. For less formal things like STDs and TY cards, I think the clear ones are OK, but for a wedding invitation, I would not use them at all.
Feeding them into the printer is not difficult at all. What you should do is cut a paper to the size of the envelope and practice that way first. WHen it's all good to go, then start w/the envelopes.

I have to agree with the other two ladies, Labels are a no- no. They take away from the formality of the invite.

Re: addressing my invites? By hand or computer?
I helped a friend do her invites at my job and it took us about 4 hours to do on a Saturday. We did the outer and inner invites. The missing names I did myself as she gave them to me. They looked professionally done. And from what she told me people thought a calligrapher did them!
I used labels for my eparty return address only. I originally thought of doing it for the outer and inner env. but it didn't look right to me. But for the wedding invites I think the time spent on feeding each env. and printing the addresses on them is well worth it.
Edited to add: My friend and I had a system. I would press print and she would feed each through the printer. It goes by faster than you would think if you have one more person helping you.

Calligraphy was something I didn't want to spend on either, but I was too paranoid to do it myself -- I didn't have that many extra envelopes and my printer is very old and grumpy. I used Inkspun (www.inkspun.com), which cost just $0.39 an envelope. If you have a good printer though, I'm sure you'll be fine.

I have to add my 2 cents, too. I think I'd rather see an invitation that was addressed by hand or had the address printed directly on the envelope rather than one that had a label. It kind of takes away from the formality of it. After all, I'm sure you spent enough on the invites, it would be nice to make them really shine.
My calligrapher cost 158.00 for HAND calligraphy on both the inner and outer envelopes for 68 invitations. It wasn't enough money to break the bank one way or the other and the calligraphy is just stunning!!
If you absolutely can't afford it, my next suggestion would be to print the addresses on the envelopes directly using the computer. Or if you've got a friend with awesome penmanship, you can have them address the invites by hand.
Whatever you do, you are the Bride, so it's your personal choice. Don't go too nuts about it, as people look at it once or twice and then throw it away! But I still prefer them without the labels.
Good luck!

I did mine on the computer - directly onto the envelopes (I bought plenty of extras) and they came out Great!! I got so many compliments on them..because I matched the font on my invite. Some people said they couldnt believe that I paid to have the inner envelope printed

I did the envelopes myself on the printer and they came out GREAT, if I do say so myself. Actually, I think I've gotten 'volunteered' to do my FSIL's envelopes for her wedding.
Edited to say: They are really easy to feed into the printer, especially if you do them one at a time.
