Addressing Outer Envelopes - Please help!!

Addressing Outer Envelopes - Please help!!

I could really use some opinions.

The invitations we had designed do not come with an inner envelope. Instead, we have a custom made vellum wrap that goes around our invite. So, I need to address the outer envelope to all of the guests in the household that are being invited. How do I do this?

I have relatives with kids under 18 who are being invited. Is it ok to address it this way:

Mr. and Mrs. John Smith and family?

I will send separate invites to any child over 18, as the etiquette books say. But most of the etiquette guides I have read do not discuss what to do if there isn't an inner envelope.

What if there is only one child in that household - do I still say '...and family' or just list their name?

Please help!

you could write 'and family' of there is more than one child

and if there is only one child, maybe write their name underneath the parents, like:
Mr and Mrs John Smith
Miss Jane Smith

What about if you say The Smith Family?

I know when invites would come to our house our names werent listed on there..If it said '& family' It was understood that we were all invited and it wasnt just for my parents..

I think you should be safe that way..

Also I've seen some people put the # of guests they are inviting on the RSVP card..so theres no confusion.

Ours also had the velllum wrap inside. We wrote 'and family' on the outside. In cases where we though there would be some confusion we had a card inside the vellum with all the individual names on it.

What if I am addressing to a single person and am inviting them to bring a guest? Would the outside envelope say 'Mr. John Smith and guest?'

I would write 'and family'

If you are inviting a single person with a guest then write
'Miss Jane Smith and Guest'
If she has a bf/fh that you know of then I would write his name on the invitation also.
