addressing own invites

addressing own invites

I am going to beginning the process of addressing my own invites (on my computer - my handwriting is horrific!!) and was just hoping to get some hints on what to do and what not to do from those who have already done this....

Here is one really stupid question

Do I center the addresses or left justify them?

like this #1)

or like this #2)

THANKS

Re: addressing own invites

I just did mine. I did them for 2 friends weddings too and it really isn't that bad. Best advice is when you go buy the pens, bring the envelope you are going to to be writing on and get a permanent ink marker.

Buy many markers because the tips wear out easily. I used Sharpie ultra fine markers for my own invites and my 2 friends.

My girlfriend helped with mine because she has great handwriting. She used the Sharpie Calligraphy marker. I found it hard to use because I am a lefty.

What else? Definitely have extra envelopes. My FH hit me with a couple of changes after I was finished.

I didn't get bogged down in 'ettiquette' but if you want that, there are plenty of web sites to help how to address certain people like, 2 doctors etc.

GOOD LUCK

Deb

I did mine myself on the computer and they came out beautiful. I even matched the font on my invites. I centered mine like this

Mr. and Mrs. John Smith
3 Rose Avenue
Anytown, New York 11111

Until I got the hang of it I measured some paper the same size as the envelope and did a few trial runs.

What program are you using?

Re: addressing own invites

Jen, thanks for the reply. I just edited my original post because I wasnt sure if I should center the addresses or not. The envelope is square and it looks much better centered. I am just using a card program that I have where I can enter custom size envelopes and use any font. I am using SLOOP since that is what my invites are done in. THANKS FOR THE TIPS!!

Center the type. I did this for a friend and I plan on doing the same for mine.

bump - anymore helpful tips?

Re: addressing own invites

Before you print the labels, print them on plain white paper. I wasted a whole bunch of labels because they hung off the page. Some needed to be 2 spaces from the edge of label for them to fit right.

I did mine on my computer. I did #2 but I really like your #1!!!

Definitely practice on white paper. Have plenty of extra innner and outer envelopes. I only ordered extra outer and cut it close with my inners.

I found the inner envelopes to be more problematic because they are thicker (lining). I found I printed them pretty much one at a time because the printer would grab more than one or make this strange crinkle in the corner. I also shut the printer off after about 20 and gave it a break (I have a deskjet that is 2-3 years old). Someone recommended reeding the inners opened up but mine didn't fit in the printer that way. Also, if your printer has a setting for the weight of the paper you may want to experiment with that.

I had very little issues with the outer envelopes.

I printed my own addresses, too. I did text so that it was left justified-my envelopes were rectangular, though. I think the centered text will look nicer on a square envelope.

Like niecey, I could only do 20 or so in one sitting...or my printer would start going bonkers. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time!

I used a deskjet, and fed the envelopes in one at a time. I had to lay them out for the ink to dry for a few minutes.

I believe that square envelopes require additional postage.

Good luck!

Re: addressing own invites

I did mine the way your #1 looks! I used a really good inkjt printer and was able to feed through about 20 at a time. I was also able to feed the inners without folding them. You just have to play with the printer settings to make sure your wording comes out properly oriented.
Can I just say, I had sooo much fun planning my wedding, but this task was the worst for me. Once you finish, you will feel a huge burden has been lifted.

Re: addressing own invites

Oh yeah - another tip I just thought of. I printed one at a time (print-current page) of my inners but would put about 15-20 in the tray at a time. If the tray got too low, sometimes the printer had a hard time picking them up or the would pick it up crooked. If I put too many in the tray, the printer sometimes picked up 2 envelopes!

Re: addressing own invites

ok ... definitely center your addressess on the envelope.

Also, write out EVERYTHING. Even numbers twenty and less or one word numbers ... ie forty, thirty ... etc.

If you are addressing the envelope and using individual names ... you will have to play around. Short names go on one line, longer names get separated onto two lines

Mr. Short Name and Ms. Short Name [short names on one line]

Mr. VeryLong Lastname [longer names go on separate lines]
Ms. VeryLong Lastname

Names are Centered in both cases

Good luck!

Uh oh!! I did it like #2 is it wrong or just preference?

Re: addressing own invites

Kitty ...

if you've already done it, I wouldn't sweat it. Not like anyone scrutizes them when they get them! But I would definitely center them if I hadn't done them yet!

I like #1 better, but I think either is acceptable.

Re: addressing own invites

I did my own too and didn't have many problems. I just needed to use some of my extras to fix mistakes I made! The printer itself only messed up about 2-3. Definitely do as many of the ladies said and do some test runs with paper cut to the size of the envelope. Do your test runs with the longest names on your guest list to be sure they fit nicely.
