Addressing the envelopes.....

Addressing the envelopes.....

So my head is spinning from all the conflicting etiquette out there.
If you only know the wife (say a co-worker) and not her husband, but the husband is invited, did you put Mr and Mrs John smith on the envelope, or did you address it to the wife and put the man's name on the inner only? It just seems so strange to me to address an invite with someone's name whom I've never met!

Also, how did you do the inner envelopes? Mr Smith or John Smith or John????

And one more, did you write out numbers less than 20?? Did you write out the state??

It seems like a whole lot of nonsense but I'm afraid of doing this wrong!

Re: Addressing the envelopes.....

Co worker uetsions.. still Mr and Mrs. John Smith.

I did my inner envelopes informally, so the inner envelope said 'Jane and John' not, 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith'

I did write out all numbers (except apartment numbers)

'Forty-Seven West Eighty-Fifth Street Apartment 2B) New York, New York, 10023

One Maple Drive Marlboro, New Jersey 07780

Re: Addressing the envelopes.....

This is what I did:

For married couples w/ same last name:
- Mr. and Mrs. Smith (same for inner and outer)

For married couples w/ different last names (or unmarried couples):
- Mr. Bob Smith & Mrs./Miss. Joan Hart
(Same for inner and outer)

For singles:
- Mr. John
On the inner - I would then put Mr. John & Guest

For families:
Mr. & Mrs. Smith
and family

(For little kids, I put Miss. Sarah) just because I thought it was cute.

Wow I didn't know to write names on inner envelopes! I don't remember if I've seen that before, but I do know i have seen invites without names on the inner envelope. It definitely makes sense for singles if they get a guest, though, so you don't have to write 'and Guest' when you address them!

omg, we have to spell out all the numbers too?? What if they live in the city where the house # is like 5 digits long and they live on a street in the hundreds??

This is a very helpful thread! I had no idea!!

under 10 should be the number.. anything over 10 gets written out, just like a college level paper.
