Advance fee scam - Please be aware!!!

This CAN be wedding realted. Anyhoo....


The scam is a good one. I have found that a LOT of wedding planners are falling for it, but you can in your regular life as well as wedding planning.

You are selling something on craigslist. Or you post on the vendors board. Or, you are even BUYING something from the internet. You get contacted by the other party. The item costs $500 dollars. They say to you:

'Since the shipping is goig to be a lot, im going to send you a check for $1000 over the price. Pay for the shipping and send me back the rest which should be $600'.

Guess what? You get the check and DEPOSIT it. You send them the extra. The next day the bank calls you and says it was a fake check. YOU loose the amount sent to the other person.

This happened to me on Roomates.com. The good news? I knew about the scam before I cashed the check. It just was too fake for me.

Be VERY aware of ANYONE saying 'I will send you a check for more, send me the balance'.

Yea people fall for that sort of scam all the time. When I worked at a bank we used to get alot of elderly people coming in so excited they won the 'lottery' in some foreign country ive never heard of. The scam was similar to the one you mentioned.

It happens ALL the time so ladies beware! NEVER EVER deposit a check from some stranger and then give them cash!!
