So I think we are going to book the Riviera (first place we looked at and fell in love with) for 3/22/13, a Friday!!

The church we both grew up going to is in Medford though, so now I'm worried that having a church ceremony in Medford on a Friday night at say 6PM is really going to be a hassle for everyone to then race to Massapequa for the reception. I probably wouldn't be able to have my CH start until 7:30.

Ceremony at the Riviera is out of the question b/c FH is insistant on getting married at a church. Should I start looking for churches in the Massapequa area to make it easier for guests? As it is, I know people will be racing from work to the ceremony.

Does anyone else have a long trip from church to venue?

That's not a terrible trip. I've been to weddings where there was 30-40 minute travel time. I say at the end of the day do what you want to do, if this church is important to you both then do it there because no matter what, the people who want to be there will regardless of where its located. Also, from my experience for a Friday wedding a lot more people are a no show for the church regardless because of work. Also as far as start time, 7:30 is not unheard of, I've been to a few weddings where cocktail hour did not start until 7:30 / 8:00 Oclock....One more thing (which I didnt think of until after we booked our date) is it still gets dark kind of early in March - So you might want to take that into consideration when planning to take pictures with your FH - If you don't see each other till after your ceremony you may not have any daylight pictures. We had to rework our whole day because of this.

I don't think it is that big of a deal to go from Medford to Massapequa. What I will suggest is that you check with the church to see what time you can have the ceremony-they usually only have certain times for this you can't just choose what time you want the ceremony at. If you are able to have the ceremony at 6 then it can be over at 6:30 (if you aren't having a full mass) and your guests will have time to get to the Riviera for a 7:30 CH. My CH was at 7, don't think 7:30 is too late, it may actually be better for some of your guests may not be able to get out of work early. The only issue I see is that if you don't want to miss your CH-you won't have any time for pics, you may have to do your pics before your ceremony.

Thanks - I guess its not that bad of a trip, I'm just thinking more of FH city/NJ family but I just have to keep telling myself its about us! Daylight was one of my biggest fears, but Daylight savings time is on 3/10 so at least we will have an extra hour of light. But now with adding a 40 minutes drive to the venue and wherever we decide to take pictures, we will probably will miss most of our CH.

That's up to you, really. FH and I are getting married in Port Jefferson, but the parish I grew up in is in Williston Park, about an hour away. We decided it would be asking too much for people to make that commute, especially the day before a holiday, so we're getting married at a church in Port Jeff. We actually joined the parish and are going to Mass there so it won't seem strange to us when we get married. Neither one of us have a connection to our parishes so this was okay with us.

im also getting married on a friday - but its the day after a holiday, so most people will have off. we have a 3 hour break in between and the two are close to one another.
i would think that if you bump up the ceremony to like 1 or 2, you'll be ok... you probably wont have a full house, but the folks that want to be there, will be there.
you can also look at our lady of lourdes in massapequa. msgr. liscante is amazing and i wish he were free to do our wedding. not sure if they're open to outside parishioners, but i would think they are. we went there for pre-cana and they were phenemonial!

Will they marry you at 6pm? The churches that I visited wanted to do it no later than 330! Which would prolly work in your favor!

Thanks girls - i have a call into my church to see about the times. The waiting game begins!

I will look into Our Lady of Lourdes & St. Rose of Lima depending on what my church says. So close to the day, they might not even have my date available come to think of it, so I might not really have a choice anyway.

you can get married at another church that is not your parish with a letter from your parish giving you permission. I think depending on your start time you might be ok, but it might give you ease of mind to marry closer to the venue. I also didnt look to see what month you were thinking but keep in mind its a friday and there will be traffic.

hth!
