I have just finished watching my video, and have advice regarding the toasts:
1. Whomever is speaking should not 'wing it' unless they are an accomplished public speaker. Make sure they at least have some notes. My 'toasters' did not, and I am disappointed beyond words.
2. All the speakers should remain sober until AFTER they speak.
Good luck, ladies.

Re: Advice from a newlywed...
That is very good advice. I guess the problem is that you can't be worrying about other people drinking while you're taking pics and greeting your guests, etc. I am so scared of the toast for our upcoming wedding. It's FBIL and the first time I met him he said to FH 'well, at least she's not blond' (b/c FH's ex is blond). I don't have a clue as to what is going to come out of his mouth. I'll just have to hope for the best. Sorry you were disappointed w/ your speech though

Re: Advice from a newlywed...
So sorry you were disappointed!
It's such good advice...I think most brides/grooms don't want to or don't realize they need to discuss the toast with the best man/MOH...
I know that my sister was really disappointed with her DH's best man's speech at their wedding. I was the MOH, and had my toast all typed out. The best man 'winged it.' Needless to say, mine definitely turned out a lot better.
I think it's completely necessary and appropriate to discuss the toast with your best man/MOH beforehand. You certainly don't need to tell them what to say, but it's so important to let them know how much this means to the bride and groom...and give them some subtle hints that they should prepare it in advance...not everyone knows to do that.

I'm sorry that you are disappointed! If I were a MOH I would be terrified of having to do the speech. Luckily my MOH and my FH's Best Man are both English majors used to having to be prepared! My only concern is whether or not the rest of us will have to sit there with a thesaurus!

Re: Advice from a newlywed...
Rebeca, you're post reminded me: I'm dreading my video. The BM was sober and had notes - he just felt the need to go into detail about his and DH's run ins with the law. Good job, Sleaze Ball. Why can no one be trusted to do anything right?

Don't forget-you can always ask you videographer to delete the toast section! Here today, gone tomorrow-poof, like it never happened!
