Affordable housing on LI!!!!!!

I promised myself I wouldnt go into a rage when it comes to affordable housing on long island. Its a very sore issue with me, but anyway, I thought I'd mention this to everyone. In newsday today they have an article indicating the town of huntington will be holding a lottery for 30 homes in Melville. They are 2 bedroom condos on a gated 67 acre development on Pinelawn Road. The homes will be sold at $140,000. Applications are being accepted until Ocotber 1 at the huntington community development agency. The lottery will be held Nov 15th.

OMG I have seen this development being built! It looks pretty nice. (if it is the one I am thinking of...off Brush Hollow Road?)

Yeah, but you have to have an income of $67,000 or less to be eligible. I swear to God, DH and I make too little to ever buy a house and too much to be eligible for any program in existence!!

Maybe one of us should just get a job off the books!! Somehow you must be able to get ahead of the system.

I heard they had over 1,000 applicants for the last thing like that. For anyone who is under $88000 combined salary, you may be eligible for the SONYMA mortgage program, which has 5% rates!

I googled Huntington community development agency and the website listed a number. She said you have to fill the application out in person at 100 main street in huntington.

It irritate me b/c what you make & your spendable income are NOT the same. DH makes a nice living, but he buys about $25,000 worth of tools each year just to keep himself current.

i called about this awhile ago. DH and I do not make great money and we were way over the eligibilty. I think these house are for ppl who are almost on welfare b/c you have to have minimal income to qualify!

If you are not married could just one person apply?

You probably could, but I am not sure. You should call them on Monday and find out. It's definitely worth a try. I wish we could apply. Even just to be able to put your name in and take your chances would be worth it.

This whole topic just makes me NUTS!!! We can't live here and we make a decent salary - not great, but ok. And we can't afford anything but a place in a horrible, crime ridden neighborhood.

Re: Affordable housing on LI!!!!!!

I actually asked about this development on the Home board!!!

I went there today and the woman was so incredibly RUDE to me. The first lot was houses and townhouses, completely sold out.

They're going to start building the 2nd round, which will have the lottery. Their only building townhouses and condos this time, not houses. I guess b/c there's nothing really to sell yet, the woman didn't find the need to give me the time of day.
Although I don't qualify for the lottery, the price range of the other townhouses sounded reasonable (from the receptionist)

Whoever said is it near (I think it's pinelawn)- yup, it's right there. I wanted to see a sample home & they wouldn't show me anything!
