afp only for spina bifida-- does it give false positives
Dr said that she will be giving me the afp test next visit I told her that I didnt want it. I already had the ultrascreen for downs and trisomy. She seemed offended when I said no. I said I didnt want uneccesary worry if I got a false positive. She said the one for spina bifida doesnt give false positves only the one for down syndrome?

We got a false positive for downs (actually an increased risk of 70 to 1)...when I was about 4 months preggo with Sofia...Dr. suggested an amnio, which we did...of course everything turned out fine thank GOD!! I was also told the one for spina bifida doesn't give false positives...

If you do not want a test done then no doctor should be offended. You can just tell her that you do not want furthering testing and that is a decision you and your husband have made. period. You should not have to explain your reasons to anyone.

My mother had the test for spina bifida and they told her my brother had it and that she should probably get an abortion, this was 18 years ago. My mom and dad decided against it b/c my dad always wanted a boy and this was their last child, me and my sister were already born. Thank god they didn't listen to the doctor b/c my brother was and is now in perfect health.
