after closing did your seller stay in the house for any length of time

We are closing on a Wednesday but the seller is staying until Friday. Does that mean we don't get the keys until Friday?

Probably.

That happened with my sister and a couple of other people I know. A lot of times your seller needs to sell before they can buy. But I think this is something that should be in the contract.

Yes you wont get the keys until Friday and that should be stated in your contract. Take a look and see how long the seller has to stay in. If it's allowed in your contract you're going to have to be patient and wait the couple of days.

We closed last Tues and just got possession last night. I think it's NYS law that the seller has 5 days before leaving, and after that, they need to pay you X amount as per your contract. of course, our sellers left JUST before they had to start paying us!

And yes, we didn't get the keys til yesteday either

We closed last June and moved into the house in OCTOBER!!!!!!!!! Yes, 4 months later but it was something that we had worked out with the sellers as we knew them and we had a special situation.

We just held some money back into escrow and then when we moved in we made sure everything was in working order for 48 hours and then released the money.

They were really cool about us stopping by to do measurements and one or two vendors coming by for measurements also - we got really lucky.

We closed on Wednesday and our seller left on Friday. We thought we would get a set of keys at closing, but she claimed she only had one set. On Friday, I met her at the house with my real estate agent and did a final final walkthrough, right before her moving truck left. That's when I received the keys. Make sure you get to do another walkthrough before the seller leaves.

I got the keys to my house the same day we closed. I guess it can depend on the seller. I always thought that once you closed, th ehouse was yours right then and there.

It's not a law - it depends what is in your contract...I ALWAYS take that out of the contract, that's just me...when I bought the house -I want the house - and I want to change the locks ASAP.

If it is in your contract, you have to stick by it...lesson learned for next time :)

Enjoy the house!!!

That happened to my mom with her house but, they gave her a set of keys and then gave her another when they left.

My seller ended up staying 3 months after closing... She was a senior citizen moving into a new house with her daughter and felt awful causing problems with her. She was a sweet lady. Plus, I was still living with my parents at the time so I wasn't in a rush to move in.

My lawyer had worked it out that she would pay me rent while she stayed living there. . That actually was a BIG help.

And if I remember correctly, I didn't actually get the key until she finally moved out
