We're having a day wedding and then having an 'informal' after party in the pub of the hotel that we are staying. How do I invite people there? Should I have put it in the invitation or just word of mouth?

I would say word of mouth or at the rehearsel dinner, and you could also have the DJ announce it at the end of the night.

My MIL gave everyone little cards outside the church while they were waiting for us to figure out letting them know they had a place ot go during the gap in between the church and reception.
Maybe you could do the same. Have someone stand at the end of your receiving line or the doorway of your CH and give them to everyone

how many people will be at your after party and what hotel are you using? I was thinking about that, unsure what hotel bar could hold about 50-75 people. That will probably help me pick which hotel to block rooms at.

i would suggest a little note in the invite so that people can plan ahead in terms of babysitter or any other plans they might think they could schedule since your wedding is in the daytime. The element of surprise is nice but it could potentially backfire.
