I just got engaged this past sunday & FH and I started to plan an engagement party. So far we have 115 people, which is a lot but that's just our immediate families & close friends!
My mom & I decided to have it at this Yacht Club by our house because you just have to pay for the room & not per person, so it is way cheaper especailly when having so many people.
But now my FMIL wants it at a restaurant because the Yacht Club isnt up to her standards and she always has to be better than everyone in her family.
But I've had parties @ the Yacht Club before and it's awesome! & Cheap!
What am I suppose to do??
And if anybody can suggest cheap places to have an engagement party for 115 people just incase that's where we are going to have to have it.

sorry for the long post,. but I had to vent because I'm already annoyed and I just got engaged a few days ago. Oh Boy!
Have it where YOU want to have it. Don't listen to anyone else! Tell her unless she wants to pay for it this is what you can afford end of story...

Ditto. If she wants to pay for it, then she can have it at a restaurant of her choice.

Have it where ever you want! This is most likely going to continue throughout the wedding planning so you should put your foot down now. It will make it easier in the long run...take it from someone who has been there.

yea i agree with everyone else...have it where you want it and tough if she doesn't like it...unless she offers to foot the whole bill then she really doesn't have a say

I hate to say it but you might have problems with the ILs during the entire process if its starting already.
I only let people have an opinion if they were paying for it. Since I paid for just about everything the only opinion that counted was DH & mine.
Unless your FMIL is paying I would say thank you for your opinion but this is what we are doing!!!!!

I found that the least confrontational way to deal with other people's unsolicited advice was to say 'Thank you. I'll take that under advisement.' And then just leave it at that.

congrats!!! welcome to the club with annoying FMILs... mines a pain like this too!
i think you should just have it at the yacht club like you want to... better off letting her know now that you are in charge!! LOL i know it sounds silly.... but dont let her walk all over you!

exactly.. if she is paying for it then fine.. but otherwise yu have it where you want to have it.. I would offer the same price you would of paid for the room and let her pay the difference per person at the restaraunt if its that important to her.. otherwise have it where you feel is best!!!

If your FH and you agreed on a place, then have it there. I had the SAME fight with my parents for the engagement party. FH and I wanted a simple, backyard thing and my parents wanted it at a resturant. FH's parents wanted it at his house but their house just wasn't big enough. We had about 90 people on our GL.
I told my parents that this is what we want and we hope that we can have it in their backyard. (PS - I didn't even want one but FMIL told me she'd have one anyway with just FH's family). My parents agreed and his parents weren't the happiest until we measured out everything and priced everything. The engagement party was a HUGE hit and we were both VERY happy. there is going to be a lot of arguing over the next couple of years. You should do what you want, but try to pick your battles.

This is simple........Tell your FMIL ' No problem we will have the party wherever you want' Than tell her to make all the arrangements at the place of her choice, put down the deposits needed & pay the bill at the end. Than tell her ' let me know what time you want your son & I to show up.' Put your foot down now! Or forever deal with the B.S.!

i think you should have it at the place you want to have it. if your FMIL gets her way now.... who knows what stunts she will try to pull later on... good luck!
and FYI- the engagement drama started during the planning of our engagement party as well! and it continued for a while in EVERY ASPECT.... its died downa bit now...
but remember its YOUR and FH wedding and decisions should come from you first. SUGGESTIONS are welcome , but thats all they are.

i agree with the girls...if she's not helping with paying for the party then you have to choose a place that you and FH agree on!
its wayyy to early for this drama...but my FMIL was giving me a headache one month after we got engaged...so i feel your pain! you have to let it be known that you are going to do what you & your FH wants and that's it!
