Ok so in an email conversation today with one of FH's relatives she goes on to tell me how she will be getting her 13 year old son a suit for our wedding and yada yada.
But the thing is we are not having kids...and I don't even know how to respond. I feel so bad, but FH and I decided in the beginning that 18 was the cut off age....so how to I broach it or respond...
Please help because I have no idea?
UPDATE: So i was honest and I spoke with FH last night and he was so mad, he feels that we have no need to explain ourselves and that we don't have to make sure the understand - they should know! I haven't seen him get like that over anything yet, I think he was just upset because his side of the family knew that we weren't having kids at the wedding and kind of put me of the spot - so this was my repsonse for anyone that comes up against this sticky subject.
thought XXFMILXX might have mentioned this to you earlier, I spoke with her a few months back, FH and I have decided to not have children at the wedding. The only one will be my sister being that she is in my bridal party. Unfortunately this one is a touch decision because we'd love to have everyone there but we decided to make it an adult evening wedding.

Thanks for the suggestions yesterday, I feel good about being completely honest. Although I didn't think we would have to deal with it for a while. But hey you can't plan these things

Re: AHHHH Need Help!!! Please
If you are going to respond to it I would have your FH do it since it is his side of the family and he probably has a better comfort level with them. Otherwise...wait until the get the invitation!!

He doesn't really talk to them, I have more of a relationship with her than he does. I just don't want her to go out and get him something to where, and I don't know if I should avoid this topic any longer? ekkkkk I feel like she's going to get pissed

Re: AHHHH Need Help!!! Please
i would either have FH take care of it or just word the invite to the adults - i am sure you can handle it when they send back the RSVP card with how many are coming or they will call and ask - i would just mention that you are the max with the adults - no room for the kids - so sorry

I would be honest with her now before she buys the suit

Re: AHHHH Need Help!!! Please
I would just tell her up front....I'd rather someone would tell me something like that before I went out and spent money on it.
The other option is he is 13---is he mature? Maybe you could do a Teenagers are okay but no children? I'm going to do 15 yrs and up b/c I think at that age they would be fine at a wedding. I also only have a couple of these----if you say yes to this person and then that means you'd have to add like 30 more people b/c they have teenagers as well - then just go back up to my first option.

I would just come out and tell her. I told everyone we are having an adult affair and everyone must be 18 or over.

He is 15 but then as you said we would have to invite about 15 more...and it's just something we didn't have to do. We were dreading when this came up but here it is!

ABSOLUTELY! Just be upfront with her and say I don't want you to go to the trouble of finding a suit because our cut off for 'kids' is 18 because we really needed to watch cost. I am sure she will understand. I always understood when my Mom was invited to weddings and we (my sis and I ) weren't. I am sure it will be fine, just be honest up front otherwise she might be pissed and be like you knew I was going to buy him a suit and you let me go out and spend money knowing full well he wasn't invited! Tell her before it gets sticky ya know?

Re: AHHHH Need Help!!! Please
I had to tell a few family members that they couldn't bring there children. Some responded better then others. I simply said - we'd love to invite everyone but we really had to make some hard choices and I'm sorry but we had to stop somewhere. Most where understanding. Most realize when they got married - they were in similar situations.

Ohh sticky! There's no way you'd make an exception for a 13 yo? If you're not having kids then you definitely need to stick to it and have your FH do it. Explain that costs, etc, have prevented you from including children. Just make sure you do it before she buys that suit, or else thats another thing you'll have to hear about!

I wouldn't 'sugarcoat' my answer in dealing with giving them an explanation. If you don't want to have kids, then it's just as simple as that. Don't let anyone dictate to you about who you want to invite to your wedding.
