This may sound like a stupid question, but before I try and figure out who I have to call about this, I thought maybe someone on the boards would know the answer to this.
3 years ago I had shoulder surgery and they put a metal plate in my shoulder. It's surgical steel, not titanium. I went to the Liberty Science Center and they have the metal detector and I asked the lady if she could just put the wand around my shoulder to see if it beeped, and it did, though faintly.
So In May, I'll be flying for the first time. Do I need a card or an x-ray or something to show to security? I asked my surgeon this after my surgery and he kind of laughed at me and said just wear a tank top and show them my lovely scar. I really don't want to have a problem. I mean I definitely would show them the scar and wear the tank top.
If anyone has any experience with this (or maybe a relative or friend or someone) that knows anything about this, I would so appreciate any info. Or, if anyone knows who I would call to find out this information, that would be great too.
Thank you!

Re: Air travel ??
i dont think you need to worry, but depending on how big the plate is, you should just bring an xray for safety precautions.
the metal detectors don't trigger at any amount, there needs to be a certain amount of metal in you for it to go off.. so i think you should be fine.
my friend broke her ankle and they had to insert a bunch of metal pins in her to keep her bone stable and she flies all the time. she does carry around a picture of her xray on her iphone just in case though.

Re: Air travel ??
FH actually just broke his ankle in January, and had a metal plate and 8 screw put in. That was the first thing I asked the doctor and he said it should not set off any metal detectors and he should not have any problems. We havent flown yet but I have to hope the doctor knows what he is talking about. GL

You can definitely get something from the doctor to show as proof just in case. I know both my Aunt and Grandmother carry something with them when they fly.

Re: Air travel ??
My dad carries a card with him with a serial number for his new hips. But that's heavy duty construction /size in comparison with just a plate. I think you will be fine but you may want to play it safe and bring a note with you; i doubt an xray is necessary (you do have a scar).

I had back surgery & have rods and screws in my back (they are Titanium though). I asked my surgeon too and he said the SAME thing!!--Show them your scar. He also said that they probably wouldn't go off in the airport. He said since 9-11, they don't care about any type of card. I've travelled like 3 or 4 times since then & they've never gone off.

I had ACL surgery but I believe I have titanium. When I first flew my doctor just wrote a note in case. I have flown many times and I have never beeped. You should be fine, btu maybe grab one just in case
