A friend of mine wants to become a NYC teacher but has to work full time b/c of living expenses.
Is it true that you can become a substitute teacher in NYC by just going down to the DOE in Brooklyn and filling out some paperwork?
Is substitute work available on a daily basis?

Re: ALL NYC SCHOOL TEACHERS
I got my subbing license a few years ago. When I went you needed to go to the Regional office. You filled out some paper work and needed a money order.. I forget the amount. Then they sent you to Court Street to get your Smart Card picture taken and also your fingerprints, if you didn't already have that done. Years ago, you needed a nomination letter signed from a principal in a NYC school.. not sure if you need that anymore.. you can check the website and go to DHR forms.. there is a substitute teacher packet with more information. As for subbing work, I subbed for about 6 months after student teaching before finding a perm. subbing position and eventually getting my own 1st grade classroom this year... if your friend is a 'good' sub she will get a lot of calls.

Subs in NYc make $120 a day! Go for it...but tell her to have fun waiting for all of her paperwork to go through in a timely fashion. I started mine in May 03 and I still didn't get paid as a teacher until oct 03..it takes forever!!!

she needs to be certified i believe. i think she can do a maximum of like 30 class days with a bachelor's degree without certification. don't quote me on the number though
