Ok so I graduate this year with my BA in psych...but I am going to get my Masters in Early Childhood/Special Education
Now I dont really want to work at a day care I mean its not to be snotty or anything I just feel I can make more with a BA degree not just being a teachers assistant making 8$ an hour...
Now I know some places I can be considered a Teacher (not a lead teacher) and get paid well just work alongside a certified teacher. Or I can work as a Teacher's Aide in a school like Garden City or Babylon etc. And get paid good money- I heard someone was making 18$ an hour with benefits working as a teacher's aide focusing on one child in the class who had autism at a school....
anyone know how i can go about finding a job like that or even getting a teacher job like i mentioned before that doesnt require a certification as of yet...
do i make any senes?? haha
I just want to get my foot in the door and start getting to know school districts and people....
TIA

Re: All teachers or teacher aides....
look in the new york times. They post those sort of positions. It is definitely the way to get you foot in the door. I know of people who have their teaching licenses and still do a TA thing just so they get the job they want! Check out the NY times or go the some school websites. Alot of schools are now part of one online way to submit resumes. Let me know if you need any additional information, hope this helped

Re: All teachers or teacher aides....
Teacher aides in my district get paid $7.77 an hour to be a one on one for children. Teaching Assistants make better money however in order to do that you need to be a certified teacher. You might also want to check because I know you need to take some form of test to work in a school under any capacity (like a teacher aide) test that you must pass. You might want to try substituting in some districts. I believe (not positive) that you can sub with a BA degree for a period of time without being certified (I think it's 30-45 days not sure tho). You would get better experience and get paid better and if it's only May thru the end of the year it may be better off. Hope this helps. FM me if you have any questions. Good Luck!

Wow...that's crazy. In my district you can't even sub without being certified. Good for him. I wish it were that easy when I was trying to get a job

Thats what I have too....tough field it's awful. I'm thinking of going back for reading but even then it's so flooded. Science and math are huge now...smart on your brother's part for picking a shortage field.

Re: All teachers or teacher aides....
sorry to crash ur board! I am an early childhood teacher, I teach in NJ and I made a wonderful salary, with wonderful benefits. I don't know much about early childhood in New York but there are 33 abbott districts in NJ that offer free public school education, so maybe you can look into NJ? hope this helps! XOXOXO Kitty
P.S-NO Early childhood teacher should get paid $8 an hr!!!!!! It's a TOUGH job!!!!

Re: All teachers or teacher aides....
Most districts will hire subs uncertified, the pay is just A LOT less, and most districts won't hire a permanent sub that isn't certified. To be a teaching ASSISTANT, you need a certification, to be a teacher's AIDE, you do not, but the pay is really low. In most cases, without a certification or teaching background, you're lookin at around $10/hr.

Re: All teachers or teacher aides....
I am a teacher at Sewanhaka High School...I am a special ed teacher and we need two teaching assistants for next year..In order to be a teaching assistant in any school now you need to get your TA certification...i thin kit is just passing a test. Any one can be a 1:1 aide..They dont get benefits and get paid very little...It isnt worth it to do that..but it is really easy to get your TA certification and then go for your masters in teaching...Let me know if you need anymore info!! Good luck

Re: All teachers or teacher aides....
Thank you all who responded...
now is the Teachers Assistant Test hard...I have taken several education/special education courses even though I major in Psychology...and I used to work as a teachers assistant at a special education school on LI (Just Kids in W. Babylon) but only get paid 7.50$ and I do several hours a month of observations at the school for my independent studies at school....
So I definitely have experience workign with special education students...and I love it...
but does the TA test allow you to get paid a higher salary than $9-10 and do you normally get benefits as well??
Thanks everyone
