Allergic to white gold???

Tell me if you've ever heard of anything like this....

Last month before the holidays, my wedding ring finger got a rash under my band, which is white gold. I would leave my wedding ring off, put corizone on it (very itchy), after a few days it would look better so I put my ring back on, only to get the rash back!!!

Finally, I went to the dermatologist yesterday who told me that I am allergic to white gold and should get platinum rings, that platinum is hypoallergenic and that I will keep getting this 'contact dermatitis' if I continue to wear my ring!! The thing is, I have worn my e-ring (also whtie gold) and my wedding band since March '03 and it's been fine since last month. And I wear a slim white gold/diamond band on my right hand with no allergic reaction!!!

The doctor couldn't explain that one to me, says it just happens like that. DH already said to get my e-ring reset and to get a new band, but is this a waste of money???

I've heard of this. A friend of mine has it but I think she can wear silver, just not gold or white gold.

So this doctor isn't crazy?

I don't wear a lot of jewelry, but I used to wear silver and I was fine with that. I never wore gold until I got engaged. I heard that nickel or something is mixed in to yellow gold which turns it white which is what might be causing the reaction. But why didn't it bother me before?

I think white gold has to be redipped to maintained its 'white' coloring. Its possible that the outer layer has come off your ring, and you're allergic to what ever it was mixed with. I don't think the dips are that expensive, so maybe you should try that before you reset the ring.
