allergy to cats?

allergy to cats?

hey...so me and my bf have been together for almost a year and talk of moving in together next year has been thrown around a lot... but theres one problem. I have a cat, and he happens to be allergic to it.

Did any of you experience this problem? How did you handle it? He tries to take the allergy pills but they rarely work on him. I don't really want to get rid of my cat for a couple of reasons... 1... i love him a lot and consider him almost a child... and 2... even if i did want to give him up I would want to be assured that he would be well taken care of and not euthanized or mistreated, and i just wouldnt have that assurance.

Help!

i'm allergic to cats and FH has one. i have to clean like crazy: vacuum, dust, wash the linens, air out the house frequently--in order to keep the dander factor down (that's what most people are allergic to). air filters help. claritin works for me, but zyrtec is supposed to be great for pet allergies.

it is doable, but you have to be on top of it.

Oh No!!!!!!!!!!! How bad is the allergies?

I grew up w/ cats and then became allergic to them.....my face gets puffy, skin breaks out and I'm itchy...it goes away as soon as I remove myself from the place.

I know how you feel about the kitties...ohhh

give it a test and see how FH handles the dander it....may have to just constantly vacuum the house and clean to see how he reacts...it may not be that bad.... I don't know if this is good advice

LIke the previous posts said, clean like crazy, but that doesnt always help. Most people who are allergic to cats are allergic to a protein in their saliva and we all know cats bathe themselves by licking their fur.

I am really allergic to cats and I would take pills and sometimes they worked and others they did not. I went to the allergist and I started to get allergy injections. I never finished the treatment since I hated the dr.'s office and staff and gave up on it, but that is supposed to work.

How is your FH when he is around the cat now?

My FH is allergic to cats too, I have a persian and a himalayan and his allergies do act up when hes over but its gotten a little better over time (weve been together 7 years). He knows i will not give them up, and he also knows i will probably get more (i rescue/foster cats so i usually have more than the 2). I try to vacuum everyday, not let the cats in the bedroom, and since they are long hair i shave them to cut down on the shedding.

A friend of mine has 12 cats (yes 12) and her husband is extremely allergic. She does the same as me with cleaning and not letting the cats into the sleeping areas and with that and some allergy meds he's ok. But like my FH her husband has gotten better over time. You body starts to adapt if your around the allergin for a while.

Air purifiers and air conditioners help too.

FH has 3 cats. I am allergic to one of the cats. I just avoid the cat. I mean, sometimes I pet him but I just go straight in FH's room. When we move in together, we are living in the basement so the cat will be upstairs. I need to keep the apartment free of dander so I don't sneeze and stuff. But I find staying away from the cat helps.

this happened to me. i moved in the FH and he had two cats who he happened to be in love with. for the first three weeks i was absolutely dying. i lived on claritin and cleaned the house like crazy. now, i don't really notice it as much. you get immune to the dander after a few weeks of being in constant contact with them.
