Already Married? Changing Name Q!

Already Married? Changing Name Q!

Preparing to go on Friday to DMV & SS office to change my name. After reading a site (don't remember which), it says something about bringing your marriage license which shows what your new name will be. My official copies do not show my new desired name at all- just the facts, his b-day, mine, wedding date, etc.

Does anyone's official marriage license show their desired new name on it? Can't you just put down what you want when you go to the offices?

UGHHHH

TIA!

Where is says name on your marriage certificate should be new name. If not you have to either go to court to change it or back to Town Hall where you got it.

Ugh!!! I got married in PA, so I don't know if that makes it different- is it possible?

Neither the official copies I received in the mail nor the one the Officiant gave me the day of the wedding say my new name on them anywhere. The official one says (I'm paraphrasing here) 'a marriage license was issued on x date to Hislastname, His firstname and Mymaidenlastname, Myfirstname and that the said persons were married on 8/5, blah blah blah'. Then it lists his name and where he was born & parents names, then my name (maiden name) and where I was born & parents names.

Nowhere on it does it show what I want to change my name to...my name, then his last name.

What I did with my name (added Dh's last name to mine w/o a hyphen) is not an option on the NY marriage license. I live in VA (married in NY) and when I went to SS with the marriage license (which has my maiden name only) it was completely fine. They just needed to see proof of the marriage. Not sure how it would be in NY SS office.

Thanks, hopefully that's the case with Pennsylvania marriage licenses too. They don't have any good chat boards in PA that I've found, so I had to ask around here. Thank you!!! I was just dreading the thought of standing on line for an eternity at SS office just to have them tell me my license is incorrect or something...

I dont know how that would work. It doesn't hurt going there and seeing. My officiant gave me a copy and he said I would be able to change everything and when I went to the DMV they said they need the originals.

I would go to your town hall here and see if they can do something...

Unfortunately I got married in Pennsylvania & I live here, so it's tough to get to their town hall again. I guess I'll try my luck and head down to DMV tomorrow. Cross your fingers for me ladies!!

Thank you, it is very helpful! We'll find out tomorrow if my Pennsylvania marriage license has what I need on it or if it's not correct.

THANK YOU
