Alright - how much do I tip the Matre'd???

Alright - how much do I tip the Matre'd???

Our first contact at Capitale (he got fired) told me $1,000 is the norm. Now remember - this is NYC, so I was expecting this.

Well, when I had my final tasting I asked our new contact if $1,000 is about right and he just didn't answer me....he changed the subject. It was really weird, but I kind of felt like he thought $1,000 wasn't enough!!! Am I going nuts? Is $1,000 enough for an NYC wedding? We already have all the service charges tacked onto our bill!

Edited to add: We have 200 guests, so that is $5/pp

what if you gave $1000 and that was it? Would the tip police arrest you?

If they think that it's not enough too bad..jeez-how much money do you have to shell out?

its normally 2.50 to 3.50 per person. That is a bit much $1000. No way.

It can be anywhere from $2 - $5 per person, so you would be paying on the high end. Personally I think it should depend on the 'work' performed as opposed to the 'etiquette'.

My place (which is on LI) said $5-$7 per person is the norm....I am having over 200 people and that would be around $1500 which is crazy...I think of giving around $750......

I absolutely agree! We tipped based on how we thought he did his job.

You guys are very generous. We gave what the caterer told us to. Since he is her boss, we did just that - $250. I never heard of a tip being in the contract. Only overall gratuities.

I think $5 pp is more than sufficient. Maybe he changed the subject cause the norm is less and he didn't want you tipping him less?

Good luck!

I've heard $3-5/person. We ended up doing $5.

Yes...of course you tip how the person performs...so one of the best tips I learned on this site was to NOT seal the tip envelopes. Budget for the high end and deduct if need be.
We pulled money out of two envelopes that night.

$3-5pp is what I see all the time

Re: Alright - how much do I tip the Matre'd???

I was always told 3-5 but then I started hearing how even that is a lot for some of us short on the funds brides so it ends up being more like $2 or 2.50. My brother's best friend got married in NYC and he did about $5 a person and his Maitre'd bent way over backwards for him it was unbelievable. He's usually a big tipper too so it's a base for me to judge.

My sister says 'are you ever going to see them again $50 is all I gave! they added 20% gratuity to my contract why do I need to give more!!!!??' I don't agree with this but it has a valid point. You are never going to see them (maybe? lol)

My move will be to aim for the higher end and keep my envelopes open! As the night goes on the money will get shuffled by performance. Maybe one vendor will get more and another less or maybe I'll just come home with money? It's service that justifies how much not the 'norm'

Alicia-give what you think is fair and based on performance. Don't get crazy about it. they're not going to throw you out of there. After all-by the time you tip the party will be over!

I think that's very generous.
