alteration Question....

I posted this on the other board too, but I thought maybe you girls could help me...
My great-grandmother made my grandmas wedding dress, my mom wore the same one when she got married and I would love to wear it too. Problem is that my mom and grandma are small people. My mom is 5'3 and was 95 lbs when she got married. Im 5'6 and 130, so Im wondering if there is any way that a seamstress or someone would be able to make it bigger for me without ruining it since its so old. Anyone know anything about this type of thing?

Re: alteration Question....

you can let out the seams a little bit - that will only give you a few inches

you can also make it a corset back so that way you can tie it to the right size

good luck - i am so jealous i wish i could do that!

I was told two sizes is what they can do - or as stated wear the dress and see if they do panels or a corset back.

i am sure if you find a good seamstress she can work with the dress and let it out some. i found a seamstress in manhattan through Catalina and co. (they specialize in cleaning and restoring vintage wedding gowns) who i am going to see in a few weeks. She seemed really good when i first met her, i will let you know how she is and if you want i can give you her info.

Re: alteration Question....

I saw a post similar to this a while back and another bride suggested that instead of trying to alter an old dress too much... have a replica made by a dress maker. I am not sure how much that would end up costing but I thought it was a good idea.

Definitely let me know how it goes! I dont want to trust this dress to just anyone, I would be so upset if something happened.

Thanks for all the advice girls!

I thought I heard they can only let it out to two sizes diffrence...but I could be wrong. I'd be a bit worried though that considering that the dress is old that making a replica might be best in this situation.

I think it's great that you're able to at least have that dress that has been passed down from generation to generation.
