Alternative to formal living room??

Alternative to formal living room??

Our new home has a living room and family room. Rather than make the living room a formal living room what else can I use it for? We have a den/office already which I'd love to make a study. Any other ideas? TIA

do you have a separate dining room as well?? if not you could use one of the rooms as a dining room... it can also be a card room type of place...

pool table?

Funny you say that..FH wanted to do that with ours! Fortunately we turned our 'formal' living room into the 'den' and made the former 'den' the pool table room...Personally I dont' see the point of a 'formal' living room...All it becomes is a showplace & no one ever sits in it!

I grew up in house where the living room and the dining room were completely OFF limits

I want to do something different with ours

I like the pool table idea- but was thinking of maybe a gym?

we will most likey buy a 4 bedroom house for just the 2 of us- so that leaves alot of rooms

office, den, guest room- dining room- which I need b/c of all my new stuff

anyone have any other ideas?

is it a highly visible room? if so, i would make it the den and the other room (less visible) a pub/game room. you could have a freestanding bar (pottery barn has a really nice one), pub/game table, leather chairs and an electric fireplace.

I like the games room/bar idea. We have a room in the back of our garage that we're going to fix up like that with darts, a 5 in 1 games table and a bar.

I love the bar idea- Crate and Barrel also has a nice one!
