am i being a bridezilla (long)?

am i being a bridezilla (long)?

we had our RD last nite. i am really getting annoyed at FMIL and i am a bit worried about what will happen at the wedding. ever since FILs got here things have been really hectic. 1 person out of 11 rented a car, so we have been doing a lot of driving all week, which i dont mind as they all did fly here from australia, so fair enough. BUT for the RD i basically said you have to find your own transportation. i did say i would meet them at the hotel and they could follow me so they know where the church is. FH told them to be ready at 5 pm in the lobby. we get there and they arent ready. first grrrr. so we arrived late to the church, but luckily the church wasnt ready.

during the rehearsal, FMIL is outside the whole time, making phone calls on my phone figuring out how to transport the remaining guests to the restaurant. this should have been done days ago. at the end of it we were standing outside the church, and she said to my mom, 'wow, lisa is going to have a high bill this month, i am calling an australian cell phone now'. my mom pays my bill (family plan, i barely use it). FMIL was laughing and my mom is like no, i am going to have a high bill. she pressed end. nothing was able to go thru anyway, as she didnt even dial the country code or anything. but still she didnt even ask......

at the end it was decided taxis were the way to go. so we get to the restaurant, and we are walking, and i said to her legally we are married now (you know the whole signing of the license at the rehearsal). she was so disappointed. to top it off she doesnt even listen to me anyway.

we sit down, begin eating, then before dessert FH and I want to give out our gifts. we give them out and then FFIL goes on to his speech, fair enough. then FMIL starts talking and pulls out the bag of gifts. she gave out gifts to everyone, all stuff about australia. meanwhile our gifts havent even been opened. finally we said everyone please open our gifts, and they did. i spent a lot of time thinking about what to get everyone and i feel she totally overshadowed us. i get enjoyment out of watching people open up gifts i gave, and so much was going on with her Australian propaganda....grrr....

i am worried that she will do a speech everytime we do something at the wedding (cake cutting etc.). i am going to have to tell the DJ, to tell then to keep speeches to a minimum.

FMIL...

I don't think so....all us bride have put time and energy into everything we do. IMO you should have your FH speak with her to explain this so hopefully you can avoid anything at the wedding.

I understand your frustration. don't let her ruin your happy day. If you are afraid she is going to make a speech warn your band, mc, and maitre'd under no circumstances is anyone to make a speech with the exception of the people already designanted.

Most important forget about everything and everyone but you and your hubby. You must make sure you get to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

I honestly would tell the DJ to NOT let anyone make a speech that you didn't specify - it is YOUR day and no one has the right to take any of it away from you. I specifically told my DJ - no announcements, etc that we didn't ok at our meeting.

You are NOT being a bridezilla at all!!

No worries...I think any bride would be annoyed with her behavior.

Just focus on your day and don't let her get you down!

No I don't think you are being a bridezilla. She is being very rude. I would have flipped out completely.

not being a bridezilla at all. one suggestion to help you keep your sanity - find out what their weddings are like in australia. it's possible that it's customary for others to give gifts and such at RD. point being, you might want to find out what they do the day of so that you know what to expect (e.g. long speeches, roasts instead of toasts) and can manage it accordingly (aka have fi explain to them that's not what's done at weddings here and the two of you would like to stick to american traditions).

Ditto. Tell them NO ONE gets the mic no matter who they say they are unless you have already approved it.

You aren't being a bridezilla at all!! And the DJ won't let anyone just speak.

BTW, I believe that in NY you aren't legally married til after the ceremony. My attorneys (I work for a law firm) told me that in NY it is a license and a ceremony, not just the license like it is some other places.

i think that is correct, since the officiant does not sign your license until after the ceremony, and then it still needs to be notarized (if I remember correctly)

That is not bridezilla at all....that is you wanting to enjoy your time as a bride and be in the spotlight
