We are having a smaller wedding, 125 people, and we were just going over tipping... Would it be terrible to give the Maitre'd $300. We figured we would add the the envelope if he/she goes above and beyond but we're looking at almost $1500 in tips. We're getting low on funds and we leave for our honeymoon the next day. I don't want to skimp on the honeymoon but also don't want to be a cheap couple. I worked in the service industry for a long time and I know how much people depend on tips but we're dying over here!!
Honest opinions are welcome!

Who reccommends that much ??? I'm having almost double your amount of people at the Venetian.. Thats almost an extra thousand for one person...
This part gives me the most anxiety...

Yeah, this kind of thing isn't written in stone. In my opinion, $300 is entirely generous and I would NOT feel guilty about ignoring some $3-$5 arbitrary rule.

We are going to be giving out tips to each person that works the tables $20 and then a separate for Maitre'd maybe $100. FH's brother works as a server at Watermill and VERY rarely (maybe 3 times in 5 years) does he ever see the tip that the Maitre'd is given so we want to make sure our servers are taken care of and then leaving it up to guests if they want to give addition to their servers.

I think $200-$300 is a perfectly fine amount for 125 ppl. :D

I know how you feel. We feel the same way. It's just getting out of control all the tips to go out that day! We were also told $3-$5 for Matre'd. Our venue includes the service fee in the price so hopefully everyone gets tipped off of that as well. Our limo company includes tips in the price but then told us we could tip another $75 on tip if we'd like. WHAT!? That's a lot of $$ to tip on TOP of their tip. Then theres make-up/hair, photo/DJ/Florist? Omg...

Stressing about tipping woke me up at 5 am last Saturday (not cute since I was severely sleep deprived already). I got out of bed to calculate everything - there was no way I was going back to sleep without figuring it all out. I'm doing the $3 p/p rule - I have 100 so $300 for Maître D and $300 for servers to split. I thought I was being cheap too but glad to see I'm not alone. Tips really do rack up.

My venue recommends $500 believe it or not...I just can't do that. i was going to go with $3pp, but honestly, you have to think of it as literally giving a tip, not this obligatory task. Giving someone $300 for a job well done is beyond generous, no matter what the standard is. $300 is like 3 days pay for me as a guidance counselor in North Carolina, I'd say that is more than generous.
Just keep reminding yourself of that because truly, if you hand someone a $300 gift and they think they deserve more, I wouldn't want to give a dime extra. Do what is best for you and your fiance.

I never thought about it like that. Figure if they have two events a night even just Fri- Sun they are making $1800 tax free. I may have to rethink my career choice. Lol
