am i being over the top...?

please talk sense into me...i wanted to do a cake for the engagement party and i thought it would be a neat idea to do a 3-D cake of a ring in a ring box made to look like my engagement ring...I can get this done for $375 and it would be in a 16x16 box...orrr i could do a two tiered round cake with the cake topper being a box with a ring for $300...now my mother and my cousin think i'm nuts to spend that amount of money on a cake for the engagement party...first because the place gives us dessert (however, it's a general brunch open to the whole restaurant and dessert is part of the display with cookies, canolis and maybe some choc cake, so nothing dedicated to us) and second because of the money... my mom doesn't think i need a cake at all and my cousin thinks i should get a cake, just not a fondant....

so then i priced sheet cakes also at a local bakery where they can do a design on the cake of a ring in a ring box...and if i go that route they need to know whip cream or butter cream??...i always thought butter was better, but she told me on the phone whip was better and it is more expensive too...

so am i nuts to pay 300 for a cake that's a cool idea..? (sad face) and if I am, should i get a cake at all, or is it a waste of money?

It's your engagement party so if you want a special cake go for it! I love the box idea!

Its your engagement party and thats not bad at all for a cake ...thats about right so i mean i would do it

I worked at a bakery for 5 years and decorated for 3 and I think that price is pretty outrageous! LOL
In the end, you should def pay for what you want.. so whether it's 150 or 300, I would still get the cake made into a ring. But.. I would def get quotes from other bakeries!!!!! Or do the tiered cake with the fondant ring and box on top and butter cream icing.. it'll be way cheaper and you'll get the same effect! And when it comes down to butter vs whipped cream.. I go whipped cream. Butter is too strong for my tastes and definitely becomes the focus of the taste rather than the filling or actual cake flavor.. Whipped cream is delicious!!!! && if whipped cream is being charged extra.. that's crazy as well!!!! It costs the bakery the same exact amount of $$$$ to make butter cream or whipped cream. & it's the same amount of work to put it on. Fondant is a whole other process so that is understandable but butter and whip are usually the same price.

IMO, I am all about being over the top which is why I like to plan my own things with MY money ( and (DH's) If u have room in your budget for it then def go for it, this is your ONLY engagement party it's one in a lifetime.. that cake will make u happy then thats all that matters!!!! Besides the cake sounds awesome and I would love to see pics of it..

For my daughter's birthdays I go all OUTTTTTTT i mean jumping castles, clowns, cotton candy machines, etc with over 45 kids every year for them both and yes i have ppl tell me ' they wont remember this, dont spend so much' well guess what I have pics and Videos to remind them..LOL a smile on their face is enough for me

Here's my daughter's second bday cake and it was 400 bucks!!! think I cared HELLL NOOO everyone was FLOORED by this cake.. get ur cake enjoy it!

ITA!! Everyone is going to have an opinion about EVERYTHING! But you know what, its not their $$, its not their e-party or wedding so when it is they can spend or NOT spend whatever they want. Until then SHAAADUP!!!
