I feel really silly posting this - but I just want to get some feedback before I drive myself crazy! I'll just start by saying that I'm not one to EVER think about what I look like - I actually prefer NOT to think about it bc I don't like the way I look. SO my Q is this - would it be ridiculous and self-absorbed if I considered going into modeling?? People have been telling me for the longest time to go for it, I get stopped all the time on the streets, even my wedding photogtrapher suggested it - and they took one of my pics and framed it in all three of their offices! DH and all his friends tell me all the time too... I always just blow it off and never take it seriously, but just this weekend at my friend's wedding, someone actually approached me to ask me to seriously consider modeling..... Part of me thinks - well if everyone is saying to go for it, then why not? The trouble is, I just don't see what everyone is talking about and I still feel like a dumpy little kid half the time, so I don't get why everyone else tells me to be a model when I feel I'm the farthest thing from one! On the other hand, I'd really love the extra money if it's something that could work out.. I'm so confused - I feel really vain, like I'm just assuming I'm pretty enough to do something like this when I might not be. Also, I have NO IDEA how to even get into something like modeling - it would just be for commericals, print catalogs - no runway stuff, I'm way too short for that!
UGH - I'm a basketcase right now just thinking about it, can you all give me some feedback? Do you think this is something I could really do, or should I not even bother? (pic in profile) I'd love to hear any suggestions or advice you might have for me, I just need an outside opinion from my family and friends bc I think they're biased! Thanks so much for listening, i'm so conflicted about this right now!

You have a totally unique look which would probably go over really big in the industry. If it's something you think you would enjoy, go for it!!!

You would need an agent--a friend of my mom's did lots of print ads...Just make sure you aren't paying them anything to represent you...Do not give anyone any money! I had a good friend who did JCrew catalogs for some extra $$...Good luck! Can't hurt to try...

give it a try... it can't hurt. I know there are some start up costs, like headshots for your portfolio and such. But you might be able to get away with sneaking in some of your wedding proofs.
Best wishes.

As long as you are very careful about who represents you & keep a good head on your shoulders I say go for it! I have a few friends who model & they love it.

Re: Am I being self-centered to even consider this??
So, based on my pic, you think I have a chance then? Thanks so much gals :) Your replies are so reassuring! I think I just needed a vote of confidence and I also need to get over this fear of being laughed at for trying to pursue modeling. I just have this vision in my head that I'm going to walk into an agent's office and they're going to shoot me down bc I'm not attractive enough to be a model - like 'who the he|| told you you could do this?'
Can I ask those of you who have friends, etc in this business to FM me? I'm just not sure where to start, who to go to, what to expect, etc. so I'd love to hear more about those details if you could.
THANKS AGAIN!!!

I say try it out - you may regret never trying. What do you have to lose but some time? I wouldn't go quit your job if you are unsure but why not test the waters and see what's involved. I know I was approached couple times about by random people. Once was a photographer who was on his way home frmo his shot and showed me his portfolio and everything and gave me his card. I regret not seeing what it was about. I was like you in that - I would just think I was too fat or have too many pimples or just seen my faults and say I am no one special plus it was way different than the career path I was headed on. At work, I try to make people notice me for my brain never for being a girl/looks. But I do think - what if sometimes.

You have an amazingly contagious smile that wows people and makes your whole face glow.
Why not treat us to a few of your favorite pics of yourself or bump your wedding proofs?

The worst they can tell you is no, and then you're exactly where you are today. Looking at your pics, I see what they see. The camera loves you, as they say. Go for it, just don't take any criticism personally -- its an extremely competitive industry that's known for being harsh. They tell skinny people that they're fat all the time.

Re: Am I being self-centered to even consider this??
Thank you so much juliet! That's so sweet of you, and I'm smiling right now from reading such a nice reply!
I actually scanned a bunch of prrofs last night for some pals, but they saved as bmp files so I couldn't post them to my shutterfly account - DOH! I really love the way our pro pics came out too... Oh well, I'll have to just e-mail them to my work comp so I can share those with you all
I don't want to showboat, but I guess I can post a few pics if you want to see them :) Here are a couple of my favs from my shower, our non-pro wedding pics and some random shots.

I think you have a very unique glamorous look to you that most modeling places love. I mean my education is only extended to my personal beliefs and a very heathy (or so I think) addiction to America's Next Top Model but I would think you have a really good look. At the very least educate yourself on the process and what it takes to at least get your feet wet. It may be a bit pricey with headshots and such but may be worth just learning about.

wow, you really do light up a room. Your eyes sparkle, your smile beams. I can definitely see you as model material.
Go for it! You don't have anything (except for a little money) to lose.

Re: Am I being self-centered to even consider this??
Thank you all, you're really helping me see that this might not be such a crackpot idea after all!
just a thought - do you think it's worth it to check with my wedding photographer about headshots? They did pick one of my proofs to blow up to a 16x20 pic for all three of their offices, so maybe with that and bc they did my wedding photos, I might get a break? I don't even know what something like that would cost - but I'm sure it's a lot!

Re: Am I being self-centered to even consider this??
The same thing kind of happened with me; people would tell me that I should try modeling. I had no idea where to start, and living in the D.C. area didn't make it very easy (at least you're in New York!) I don't have the 'high fashion' look; I'm more commercial, and I found that modeling just wasn't very easy to get into. I couldn't afford to quit my full-time job and pursue modeling. Plus, I was already like 27 years old at the time. I still dream about it though
I do think that you have nice features. So give it a shot! You never know what might happen! And even if things don't work out, you'll at least get some nice pictures of yourself out of it!
