FH is a cop and hasn't had off in almost 5 yrs. for New Years but he does this year . I knew he wanted to go out with his friends but b/c us and another couple are getting married within the next 5 months I didnt think they would want to do something $$$$. Apparently I was wrong. They want to go into the city to a club for $250 a person. Technically, yes we have the money but it is wedding money. Not only that we just spent alot of money on Christmas, his friend is getting married in February and he is in the wedding party which will be more money, we have to pay for legal fees this month over a family will issue, AND we are getting married in June.
I don't want to spend that much money and FH is upset. Should I just suck it up and spend the money or do you guys think $500 for 5 hours of partying is normal. We aren't even going to drink $500 worth of liquor.

Re: Am I being unreasonable???
personally, i wouldnt go for it, but that is just me... money is tight with us right now, and i personally think NYE is over-rated and would much rather spend the night at home by the fire, or with friends at home...

well, i dont think you are being unreasonable. that is a lot of money - plus, being in an overly crowded club in the city isn't my idea of a good time. well - either way i'm sure you will have a good time but just try to explain in to your FI - maybe he will see your point and you guys can do something less expensive. 500$ is crazy! good luck

I would never go for it, however since your FH has not been able to enjoy New Years in so long, I would leave it up to him...

Re: Am I being unreasonable???
$500 is average for a city nye party...your FH prob wants to go 'all out' since he's had to work the past 5 years...so I say spend the $$ and have a good time.

$500 is a lot of money.... I wouldn't go for it and would attempt to alter the plans a little to bring down the cost... but NYC on NYE is $$$$, so 500 is probably cheap.... i know some of the catering halls on LI were advertising NYE parties (jericho terrace, coral house) for $110 pp.... maybe suggest an alternative?
good luck!! :)

I wouldnt but I have a lot of friends who would without hesitation.
Do what makes you comfortable. Offer up some alternative plans.

You are not being unreasonable - that is an obscene amount of money to spend to go to a crowded club and drink. But that's just me. I'm not into crowded clubs. Leave this decision up to your fiance.

I personally think that New Year's Eve is a hyped up waste of money. So much anticipation and it really is like any other night out. Waste of money. JMHO

Re: Am I being unreasonable???
We faced the same dilema, and decided that b/c we are so money conscious right now that the $100 per person we were going to spend on a club in NYC was not worth it. Even if we did go and spend the $100 each, we didn't want to regret spending it when it could go to the wedding. We also wanted to enjoy NYE w/out having to think of money.
ETA: I know it's the first time he's off in 5Y and feels he's been missing out on something, but it's important to keep in mind that NYE isn't going anywhere, you guys are young, and there will be many parties to come just like this one in the future.

Re: Am I being unreasonable???
Hmmm, tough one. Since hubby hasn't had a NYE off in five years, I'd be inclined to let him make the decision (assuming he is not irresponsible with money on a regular basis), just think of all the money he didn't spend on the five past NYEs. 500 bucks is alot to spend on one night and still be in the same state you live in, but if you are going to be surrounded by close friends and are going to make the most of your night, it may be worth it (to hubby anyway). My only hesitance would be the fact that I think NYE is highly overrated and have learned from past experiences that paying hundreds to get into a club for an all you can drink deal is usually disasterous because the place is so packed you can't even get near the bar to get a darn drink. If the place is set up differently and includes a sit down dinner etc. that is a different story. I would probably go for it, next NYE that he is off should be your choice.

Re: Am I being unreasonable???
We were also invited out for $150 a person and we said NO!!! We don;t drink hardly at all and though we have the money $300 seems like way too much to us.

I agree. As ridiculous as that price is, if it's going to make your FI happy and he has not had that in 5 years, I would just suck it up. But that's just me.

Re: Am I being unreasonable???
thats tough, i personally wouldnt go for it i think its a lot of money for a crowded overated time, but issue is that your FH hasnt had new years off in years, maybe try to compromise going someplace else thats a bit cheaper?? or its either this place or nowhere?
