Our wedding date is 5/25/03 My mom lives in Ireland and is arriving on 5/6 My sister thinks its OK for my mom to find a dress here when she arrives. My mom is 5' 0, and probably a size 12. She will probably need alterations.
I am not happy about this and my sister is convinced that this is a good idea (needless to say my sister and I don't always agree)
Am I overreacting?
Edited to say - I told my sis that I won't have much time to shop with her, and she told me she would take a half day off work and bring her to Macy's and Lord and Taylor

That should be plenty of time if she plans on buying off the rack from a big department store like Macys or Saks. She can buy the dress and have it tailored in less than a week.

Re: Am I worried about nothing?
dubliner, I think it depends how picky your mom is.
I personally find it very hard to find 'fancy' dresses to fit me, I am 5' tall and size 2. I find a lot of dresses at dept. stores either boring or not made well, or too flashy.
So, if your mom is not too picky, I think its ok, however, if she is picky, I would suggest that she gets her dress in Ireland... But that's just my opinion.

Dubliner-
I think she will have penty of time. Lord and Taylor has plenty of dresses and if it needs altering that can be done in a week.

I htink it'll be ok. My mother got her dress off the rack at L&T in one afternoon and it took about a week for her to get alterations done.

She should also check Estelle's. They have MOB gowns there you can buy off the rack.

I wouldnt worry about it. Like everyone else said you can buy a dress and have it altered right away if needed. You'll be fine!

Re: Am I worried about nothing?
When you get real desperate you can even buy the dresses from the bridal stores right off the rack and a lot of the dresses are a size 12.. Don't worry plenty of time

I think she will be able to get a dress and have it altered if need be as long as she goes to one of the big stores like Macy's, Saks or Lord & Taylor.
