I have not researched what to do yet, but I am staying at Le Sirenuse in Positano. It's a beautiful 5 star hotel in the hills.

The Amalfi Coast is GORGEOUS!!! FI and I were there this Novemeber for 4 days. We stood in Sorrento then took day trips to Capri - you must do the boat ride around the isle of Capri and go and see the 'blue grotto.' Absolutely stunning. There is a great FODOR's book on just the amalfi coast!

The food is also EXCELLENT & CHEAP!!!

Re: amalfi coast

My fiance and I went to the amalfi coast last august...we stayed in Ravello and it was beautiful. We visited positano, amalfi, capri and ischia. The hotel we stayed at was called hotel marmoratta and it was in the cliffs of ravello...it was BEAUTIFUL...there was a boat you could take right from the pool area of the hotel to amalfi and positano.

HOWEVER, if you are planning on going in August, I would seriously rethink this. AUgust is vacation month in Italy and apparently everyone in Europe vacations in the Amalfi coast...everything was packed...there was no room on any of the beaches and the traffic on the amalfi coast was unreal...capri was so crowded in all the stores it was like Disney world AND it was murder trying to find a hotel room that was nice for a decent price. PLUS, we stopped in rome for a few days to shop and almost everything was closed--gucci, fendi and ferragamo were all closed...

If you need anymore info you can FM me

I'm leaving next week for Positano! We rented a villa for my family. I'm so excited!

I second Annie's concern about going in August. Coastal towns are a nightmare in august since everyone in Europe is on vacation.

Re: amalfi coast

I go every year with FH b/c most of his family is still in Italy and I wouldo NOT go in August....
The Amalfi coast is a NIGHTMARE!!!
Either way you will love it, so if you do decide to go - plan accordingly...

Aside from the advice, I would stay in positano...Capri is VERY touristy and there is not as much to do. You can easily see Capri in a single day.

Good Luck and have a GREAT trip!
