I'm not a TV watcher but i try to catch the stuff everyone talks about. That Simon creep should be shot. He is going to encourage or further eating disorders all around America!!! What a friggin a*s, he actually told the girl w/ the pink hair the her butt is too big, she was about a size 12. Geez-now I remember why I watch HGTV

Re: American Idol
I agree, he was really harsh. I think a nicer way of going about it would have been to tell her that her choice of outfit wasn't the greatest. I think the outfit she wore wasn't really suited for her, and made her look bigger than she actually is. Edited to add: Not that it was really necessary for him to say anything at all.

Re: American Idol
He thought that was actually a compliment. What I have come to realize this year is that America has been shocked in to realizing that real people have talents. Simon made the comment earlier in the auditions that America will have a hard time voting this year b/c it will be talent vs Image. America finds it hard to have a plus size Idol.

Re: American Idol
I have to say though that I really didn't see much talent tonight, especially in comparison to other nights. So many of them picked songs that were just not appropriate for their voices, while others just sounded bad overall. For the most part, I thought that Simon was right on with his comments tonight. But there are definitely nicer ways for him to say what he said, but then do you think America would still be watching?

Re: American Idol
Shamma - I totally agree. They were all so depressing and not one of them really looked like they were enjoying themselves. I'm sure they were nervous, but come on, this is supposed to be entertainment and I was bored to tears!

Re: American Idol
Simon's comment about the girls weight was awful. It also shows a double standard because he loved Reuben last week and he is overweight and he did not get any comment. An overweight man is acceptable.

Re: American Idol
RichsBride - I would say she was larger then a size 12. He also didn't say anything about her butt, just her weight in general -- she brought up the butt saying 'it worked for JLo.' Not that it matters, but just for the sake of accuracy as we continue to discuss what was a horrible statement by Simon.
shamma96- I think that his compliment wasn't the weight comment, but instead that she had it all except the current pop star image. I really thought that was he was trying to say was that if she lost some weight she would be a insta-pop star, and pointing out that her weight might be a reason she will not make the top ten. Thats some cruel honesty.
Of course, Kimberly Locke made it to the top ten, and she wasn't skinny.

Re: American Idol
I like Simon and think his comments, although sometimes mean, are often true EXCEPT that comment last night about her weight. That totally ****ed me off, why is it that Ruben who is VERY overweight was not told that! It is frowned upon with overweight women and not with men, I hate that. Simon even said that this year was very different because it wasn't about image as much as talent and then he goes and says that!!! He made me very mad last night!
RichsBride you are right, there goes everyone starving themself thinking they can only make it that way!! UGH!

Re: American Idol
Stace and others - Simon has always maintained that he is being as honest as he can re the POP MUSIC industry. Whether he found Angie fat or not personally doesn't matter - it's what the industry dictates and he knows - he has his finger on the pulse. Yes I realize that country music and R&B and hip-hop all have larger than average very successful women, the POP industry does not and that's the point he was making (Britney, CHristina, Pink, Anastasia etc). These people put themselves out there for this sort of critique.
I actually think that people tend to make themselves look stupider when they try and talk back to him. If he doesn't tell them the truth RE THE POP MUSIC INDUSTRY, someone else will. It's a sad fact of our society. And believe me, my butt is as big if not bigger than Angie's....

Re: American Idol
I missed it last night, but my mother was sooo upset with Simon. She told me he's an A$$hole this morning for saying that girl needed to lose weight... I'd be devestated if anyone told me that!

Re: American Idol
I'd like to raise a sensitive question. What factor do you think race played if any in the comments on weight? Is there a double standard at play not only on gender, but also on race?

Re: American Idol
Valenia - I am not sure I saw it as a racial comment, but more so as a gender issue. As I said before he did not comment on reuben's weight.

But he also didn't comment on Kimberly's. Coincidence?

Re: American Idol
Definitely think it is a gender issue and not race here. I think Simon saying what he says for the most part is right but with that weight comment to Angie and the fact that he said this year is different and not so much about image, was hypocritical! He should have said the same thing to Ruben but hey he sounds like Luther Vandross and we accept Luther when his weight goes up and down like a rollercoaster.
Thrilled, I understand what Simon looks at with the industry but he said this year it was different and he never made a comment to Kimberley or Ruben, then again, they weren't wearing what Angie had on either...

Re: American Idol
I guess like with anything else, it is ok for men to do it but not the girls. Do you see them selling girdles to men or control top pantyhose. A fat man will be more acceptable as a star than a fat woman and that is the plain honest truth.

Re: American Idol
I missed last night, and I'm glad I did, I would've been so upset to hear that comment.
Unfortunatlye the truth of the matter is, America frowns on overweight women, but not men. That is the Unfair Truth. *sigh*
