When FH got home from work today, our cats were locked in our bedroom
WHen I left for work today they were sitting on the table looking out the window and I would never ever lock them in and of course they cant lock themselves! FH knows the landlord was there because there was work done in the yard.
Anyone have a nosy landlord - did they come in and look around? Makes me so uncomfortable!

WHAT????That is BEYOND nosey!!!!
They should NOT under any circumstances enter YOUR apartment unless there was an emergency!!!
I would FLIP OUT if someone came into my house without my permission!!
Can't he get in trouble for doing that????

Re: And I hate nosy landlords
OMG - I used to have one of those- years ago. It was a house, I was upstairs and another couple was downstairs. The guy came home and found the landlady going through the things in his desk.
I kept the fridge at whatever temp and it somehow always got turned up (meanwhile I paid my own electric).
I told her that I knew she was coming in, advised her that it was illegal (unless an emergency like waterleak, fire, etc) she told me that wasn't true, and I told her we can call a lawyer to find out for sure. (I had cats too that were declawed, and I told her if they ever got out and hurt because of her, I would kill her). Needless to say she kept doing it and I told her we were breaking the lease to move out, and if she wanted to fight me on it I would gladly see her in court.

MINE DO THAT TOO They always shut the fan off.. and when I come home the apt is all stuffy... but I would yell at them about locking the cats in your room- WHAT'S that about?

I know exactly what you mean. Some landlords can't respect your privacy, but in the end it is their home. they can come and when when they want, but they should be some type of rule that they at least let you know they will be going up, and leave you a note (obviously except an emergency).
When I got my Bunny, (no pets aloud), we used to hide everything we brought in (food, hay, etc.) the day we moved out, litterally making trips up and down the stairs, she finally asks....WHY A BUNNY, to my FH. Good thing it was not to me, because I would have been lie, WHY ARE YOU SNOOPING. they were nice people, but that always concerned me..PRIVACY

update -
FH called the landlord and asked him and he denied it. But then he called hours later to make sure the cats were ok - feeling guilty, huh?! We are changing the locks.

We had one also. My FI came home w/ his friend one day and she was in our bedroom!!!! Also the heat would be off when I would leave it on low sometimes. She was horrible!!! I wasnt 'allowed' to have visitors over after 10:30. I told all my friends to come over after 10:30 after that. Karissa

I thought it was illegal to enter w/o your permission, unless emergency! Well, it SHOULD be!

Hi, landlord-tenant attorney here - it is totally illegal for a landlord to come into your rented premises whenever they want, unless it's an emergency and they have no way of contacting you. They cannot just come and go as they please. If your landlord is entering your premises without your permission, I would document every time you think that they are in there, just in case. I would also not hesitate to mention it to them. Hell, I'd set my video camera up to face the front door (it doesn't have to be on), but let them think that it is and that you're recording who comes and goes.

Thats a really good idea! I used to put a piece of paper in the door to see if it was still there when I came home.

Re: And I hate nosy landlords
Valentine....we just did that when we went on vacation (and it was during the blackout so we were super worried that they were going to come in), and I'm happy to say that they didn't.

Re: And I hate nosy landlords
I second what Jann said. They have to at least give you 24 hours notice to come into the apt. We rent from my Sister and BIL and he always lets us know before hand if he has to come in here. He even freaks out on my Sister if she comes in here to borrow something when we are not home. BTW my sister can come in here anytime she pleases But I definitely would freak if it was just a random landlord.
