Announcement Question

Announcement Question

At my reception my mother inlaw asked to have a family member's 50th anniversary announced and to play their favorite song. I said okay to the announcement and mentioned that I would also want to congratulate two of my bridesmaids who got engaged. My fiance turned around and told me no, that getting engaged was not as important as an anniversary (which I thought was a little insulting). He thought it would take away from the focus of our day. So I said, 'Hello, like allowing everyone watch this special anniversary couple dance isn't doing the same thing' didn't make sense to me. So I said just the anniversary announcement with everyone dancing to a song of our choice seemed like a good compromise, but I don't think he approves. What do you think?

i have to agree with your FH. 50th anniversary is a BIG deal... not that being engaged isn't, but i think it's definitely more important. also, it's a nice way to honor those family members...as well as in a way wishing you both the same luck and happiness and hope that you'll both be able to celebrate your own 50th anniversary!

i would announce it and do a song where ALL the couples can dance. at my wedding, instead of the bouquet toss, i did an anniversary dance... a song was played and throughout thesong, the band called out numbers... 5 years, 10 years, etc. and as the years were called out (which reperesented the numbers of years you were married), you left the floor. the last couple left dancing was married the longest and i gave the wife my bouquet. in our case, it was almost 50 years... go through your guest list and check to see this couple is the longest married... if they are, that's a way to honor them without making the 'announcement'

Re: Announcement Question

Our older friend's 21st wedding anniversary was the day of our wedding...so we played their wedding song, made an announcement & danced with them during the song...

I don't see why you can't mention the engaged girls at the same time & say something like 'congartulations to Girl1 & Girl2...wishing you a wonderful 50 years together like Mr & Mrs. WeddingAnniversary'

That's what I wanted to do.........but my fiance has family that has been married longer than the 50 years and can't honor that peticular couple that way.......grrrr!
