Another 9/11 question, not so controversial this time..**EDITED** Our 9/11 Memorial
I felt like editing this to make it a memorial of sorts, since it kind of moved in that direction...
Post if you wish about the people you lost, and if you have them, post links of where we can go with our good wishes and prayers.

I won't say people don't think it's a big deal anymore, but I think the greiving process has progressed enough that a lot of people are able to privately mourn this year.

They are having the ceremony at ground zero, and there do seem to be a lot of local ceremonies as well. I think it seems like less b/c it is less in the news this year. Wait until tomorrow and I bet again it is all we will see on tv.

hrmm interesting question.
I felt last year was a bit much to repeat this year.. I have my own personal reasons for that.. which I wont bother to go into.
I don't think we should forget it or blow it off. I also think if you're going to make a point of it, do it respectfully, quietly and be done. I hate this media free for all that seems to happen. Do I REALLY need to see my office hit by an airplane again so that someone who may have been living in a whole for the past two years can understand how the day was? I understand from grief counselling that some people feel 'grounded' when they see the factual pictures again.. it makes it real and easier to deal with. I'm not one of them. I have enough to deal with that day without a visual reminder of from CNN with commentary - Why the Towers Feel? Uhmm.. cause they were hit by two really big planes going really fast with lots of fuel? Just a guess.
I will probably end up watching some of it.. but shutting it off and trying to just live through the day will be what I'll end up doing for most of the time.

I lost my BIL on 9/11. My nices are not going to NYC tomorrow (for the so called festivities). They don't want to keep reliving the experience and would rather just get on with life.

Yes Misty I feel that way. I guess I feel like it is being downplayed...almost ignored! Why? That was such an life-changing experience for everyone - we have to remember it...we can't forget. We promised not to.
It's been bothering me because I myself feel I am beginning to forget. And I don't want to....

Misty, I had plan this year not to attend anymore services as it was too hard on me. I planned on not crying this year. I think things are on a smaller scale this year. It will never be forgotten.

Re: Another 9/11 question, not so controversial this time..
i think what bothers me a little is how people say 'america has changed forever' I am sorry (and please dont take any offense by this) I dont see any changes.
For the month after 9/11 every car had a flag, people had flags hanging all over their homes, people were getting tattoo's saying never forget, their was so much kindness, love, support and for a moment we felt like one.
Now here it is 2 years later and I am still seeing the hatred, the nasty remarks, no flags, and violance. on 9/11 I walked into a deli hoping to find a phone that worked. This deli was owned by an arabic man. He gave me his deli phone and told me to call whoever i had to call. He said if I needed to call long distance just to tell a family member I was ok to please do so.
I couldnt believe the acts of kindness that was given on that day and the months afterwards.
Then as the healing started I noticed the same nasty attitudes from people coming back out, the same people who offered you the shirt off their back are now giving you the finger. The same people who wore an american flag pin for a year are now stepping on you to get to the front of the line.
Where are the acts of kindness??? where is the love we shared, the songs we sang, the hands we held because we were scared???
I just feel that now people are going back to being mean where we are in a time where we need each other more then we'll ever know
(again please dont take any offense to what I just said. Its my personal feelings)

WiththisRing..
I SOOOOOOOOOO agree with you!! Especially the whole flag waving thing. No offense to anyone here, but the total disrespect of the flag I see these days is so disheartening.
In Hempstead Long Island there's a flag still flying upside down and no one has said a word. It's been upside down since 9/11.
Other flags I see prefectly reflect the sentiments I feel.. worn, tired and old. People feel.. that was then.. its over now.. move on.. get out of my way. I see a bleached out flag torn to shreds and think.. 'dont these people realize they are being disrepectful.. or do they just not care?'
There are still, however, people out there who do care. I'm one of them. I have a flag on my car.. i keep it clean and bright. Nothing else adorns my baby sports car. I belong to a auto club of sorts and they asked 'How come you still got a flag on your car?' I can't even answer them. Usually I don't have to. They get the clue fast enough. It's not just an ornament for when you feel like being american. My family is American Indian or Texan as far back as you can imagine.. even if it weren't Im born and true American and dam*ed proud of it.. always was.. always will be. I dont hyphonate my Americanism.. I don't bother explaning my past. At most when people say 'where you from?' or 'whats your background' I say.. Texas, period. NO offense to anyone, please. This isn't to be a generalization just a occasional observation of some people's behavior.
American Patriotic Sentiments has been like a band wagon over the past 2 years and THAT is the most depressing thing ever!
ETA: sorry couldnt spell.

Re: Another 9/11 question, not so controversial this time..
I have noticed that most are opting for private memorials this year as opposed to the larger ones. DH and I are attending one by our house for a friend that was killed.
I think a good deal of it is the media overkill (please please pardon the use of the word). I guess part of it is that that everyone doesn't want the media to keep telling us how to feel? Everything turns into such a circus, and when it comes to something as serious as death, I think it is best kept private. Maybe this year they are learning something...
Re: Another 9/11 question, not so controversial this time..
This was my friend... She was great.. loved frogs and her baseball team! Very spirited. Survived an abusive marriage and married a wonderful man. Mother of two great boys and an all around wonderful woman.
(Then again, who wasn't someone wonderful who died that day?)
Re: Another 9/11 question, not so controversial this time..
this is a great idea...lets post a little something for everyone...

OMG.. I seriously just lost it here in my office. I googled my friend and found an obscure site of victim names.
Her sons have been posting there. I guess unnoticed.
'I love you mom' & 'Happy birthday Mom'.
It rips me up to see this.. she loved them so.

Wow, that was a tough site to view...the very first person listed - Billy Burke - was the best friend of my mom's boyfriend (who is also a firefighter). Whew...many emotions.
A high school friend...my friend's uncle...

Just wanted to say something to everyone whether you lost someone or you are still hurting from the terrible tragedy of 9/11...
May all of your hearts find peace one day and may you remember all those that have lost their lives..
My thoughts and prayers are with you and all your family/friends as the 2nd anniversary of 9/11 comes upon us!
Just remember that it takes time to heal all wounds and that if you are still affected, it's ok... you're not alone!...
Thank all you ladies on this board for letting me share...
