Another Computer Problem

Another Computer Problem

Well my friend came over last night and installed my router, and fixed my mouse. It was acting really wierd lately. Anyway, He started doing some updates on windows update, and I asked him about XP Service pack 2. He said he would install it. It supposedly should of taken 52 minutes, and that was at 9pm last night. Well 6am this morning, the screen was still in the exact same place. The computer was all locked up...SO I rebooted it.

After it started up I got an error that said windows was unstable and that I should uninstall the XP SP2 program....so I tried and I wasnt allowed. I got a message saying if I removed the SP2 that all my programs would stop working. So then I thought about installing it again, and I got another error, saying I couldnt do that at the time.....

What should I do now?
Thanks,
Scott

Try to re-install SP2. If that doesn't work... try to un-install it, reboot, and re-install it. If that doesn't work... pray you have a system restore point for the day, or a few days before the XP2 service pack install.

I think if you have System Restore enabled... it should have taken a System Restore snapshot before the SP2 install.

How do i find out if I have System Restore Enabled??

This stuff always happens to me. Right now the PC is running, and I am at work...So as soon as I get home, I will try what you suggested.

In case this doesnt work, are there any other things that I can do to resolve this?
Thanks,
Scott

START/PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/SYSTEM RESTORE

You would want to 'restore your computer to an earlier time'. Select the date thats available closest to the day you installed XP2.

It will do a bunch of stuff... reboot your PC... and it may fix the problem allowing you to re-install SP2 and hope you get a clean install.

But I would first try to re-install XP2 before you try a System Restore.

System Restore is a hit or miss thing. Sometimes it works perfectly. Sometimes it bombs. But its a good last resort tool if your computer becomes seriously unstable.

This works on XP only and will only work if you had it enabled (ie: you have restore points/dates to choose from after you run it).

Thanks DjPill. I will try that when I get home.
