Another cruise question.Someone told me that a lot of times they upgrade you to the better room.

Has anyone ever had them do this? Why would they do this?

Its never happened to me. Cruislines tend to reserve their free upgrades to people who have cruised several times before on the same line...sort of like a reward for being a loyal customer. Since I am not loyal to one company, i dont get those perks.

I did 'buy' an upgrade the day we started the cruise...going from an interior cabin to a balcony.

What I suggest you do is watch the price of the cruise as time gets closer. If you have already paid for your cruise, you can call your TA or the cruiseline and ask for a refund or an upgrade if the price goes down.

On my cruise, the price to upgrade at the check in counter was $600 for the both of us. For me, it was well worth going from a room with no window to a room with a nice balcony.

I always like to cruise - even with a lousy room - but having the balcony really adds a whole other dimension to the trip.

For example, we got to watch the sunset a few times. Living in NY, I never even see the horizon, no less the sunset. We got to eat a few meals out there. We got to get a nice view of the islands we visited right from our room, etc..

i have been on 4 carnival cruises and on cruise 3 & 4 we were upgraded. unfortunately the HM is on a different line, so i doubt we'll be upgraded.

definitely watch the prices - as the cruises gets closer the prices may drop dramatically and sometimes you can cancel and immediately rebook and get a better cabin. usually the upgrade is worth the cost of canceling (if they charge you a fee at all).

Couldn't you just upgrade without having to cancel?

I didnt have to cancel. I called my travel agent and she got me a refund the next day.

I don't think I could just upgrade now because we have a joint bank account & he would wonder where XXX amt of money went.

maybe 'cancel' isn't the right word. sorry if i confused anyone. with price drop upgrades, somehow the TA or website 'cancels' one reservations and instantaneously rebooks. obviously if the cruise line is doing it themselves, you don't go through all that. both times we got upgraded we didn't know until they gave us our room key and told us we had been upgraded.

edited for spelling.

you can also see if you cna get a guarantee and not a cabin assignment.

with this you book the category but no room number.

Advantages - if the category you booked sells out, you may get a free upgrade to a higher category

Disadvantages - because you don't have a room assignment (sometimes until the day of sailing) you do not know where you cabin will be (forward, midship, or aft)

Whenever my FI's parents go on a cruise, all they do is ask, and it's done every time,,,,at no additional cost!

Novemberbride I didn't read the MSNBC articles so not sure if they will help - but I can tell you that - there was an article somewhere that went over the basic ways that cruises determine upgrades - which was what I was trying to describe to you. I can't find it anywhere sorry - but check out cruise critic I think they are helpful there - plus you can ask questions from people who have actually taken the particular boat, cruise and tours you are interested in
