Another home question, since it's the topic lately...

How exactly do you pick a real estate agent?

Do you just go to any office and say help me? And does the agent need to be located in the vicinity of where you are looking? Also, do you pay them, or do they just get a cut of the commission on the sale?

I shamed FH into buckling down in front of his mother yesterday (dirty, yes, but it had to be done), so now we are going to really start to be proactive and get an agent. He was recommended his barber's wife lol, but her area of specialty is Commack, which is not where we're looking, hence why I'm not sure if we would be able to use her?

It's just all so confusing to me. How did the girls who are looking/recently purchased go about the process?

We're looking in North Shore Suffolk towns, primarily St. James/Smithtown/Nesconset/Stony Brook/Setauket/Northport/East Northport, with possible considerations in parts of Huntington, Greenlawn, Fort Salonga (ha) and Dix Hills (double ha).

It's definitely a wide range, which is why we're so stumped.

We looked at some properties online (simple as Google) and we just contacted the agent listed on the first property we liked. Or you can just call a company and they will assign you one.

But any agent can show you a property, even from a different company. Not sure how it works exactly but I was surprised to learn that.

And nope they just get commission- so it is nothing to you and they just cater to you and show you properties and if they are good they will research on their own and try to find some that are in your price range and what you are looking for.

You can find affordable homes in Fort Salonga - that is where I am from!! My parents bought a small home and over the years have put a lot of work into it to make it what it is today!!! Love the area - close to Northport village, the beach, golf courses, etc.

We used my husband's family friend. Otherwise, IDK how we would have found a realtor. I'm sorry, I'm of no help to you here.

Find one in the area you are looking in.

Talk to a few on the phone. You have nothing to loose by 'interviewing' them.

Also, if you know someone in any of the areas who knows an agent, that would be ideal.
