Another kitchen question: What to paint the ceiling?

In my new kitchen, there is very little exposed wall surface. I mean, very little. But Im going to paint it a honey yellow color (probably).

My question is: Do I paint the ceiling that color too or do I paint it white?

I'd paint it white. I think the white will make the room is bigger and brighter. Provides contrast.

I have to agree as well. It may close it in if you continue the color even if it is a light color.

We painted all our ceilings white.

Now, I did something different. I really don't care for white ceilings so in almost all my rooms whatever the wall color was I went a couple of shades lighter and painted the ceiling with that.....saw it on HGTV and I love it. It depends on the color how much lighter I went. I think that makes the room look bigger because it all is in the same shade.

I agree with Margaret...our last place had a ceiling a few shades lighter and it looked great...and it was a small kitchen...look to see the options you have with the same paint company...on the smae sample card...

Hmmm...interesting. The lighter shade sounds like a good idea but Im afraid if I go a few shades lighter on the rich yellow I want, Im going to get a pastel yellow and that is eh.

I dont have any white ceilings in my house so I dont know what a white ceiling even looks like in a room with color on the walls.

white is nice or you could go a few shades lighter. to prevent a mismatch of the colors why not pick the lightest shade on color swatch (provided you are using one)? I think both would look nice.

Since it doesn't sound like a big area, paint the ceiling the same color as the walls and let it cure. If you don't like it, you can always prime the ceiling again and repaint it white (or some type of white - we're not traditional ceiling white people - all the white in our house is dover white from sherman williams. it gives the contast but its a bit warmer and has the same undertones as our color walls).

Thanks for the ideas. Im having our contractor do the painting so Im trying to avoid painting.

Ive heard that painting the ceiling a dark color makes it receed - making the room look taller. The white ceiling makes the ceiling look larger but not necessary taller. So now I dont know what to think!

Stef, If youre anti-white like me go for a few shades lighter than that color. Im sure it doesnt have to be pastel, it can be a color that just compliments it, in the same color family.... Ive done this in 2 rooms already in my house and LOVE the outcome

Stef, what color are you painting the trim? Considering that your kitchen is very small, I'd paint the ceiling white to give a more open feeling AND reflect light better. A color on the ceiling will only serve to close in the space and give you less light reflection, and judging from the elevation pics you posted, that's the last thing you'll want to do. JMO.

The only time I've every painted a color on the ceiling is in Paul's room, and that was done for continuity only b/c the mural design 'grows' onto the ceiling for effect. Otherwise, I don't even think I've ever seen a ceiling that was anything other than white.

Anna White definitely has personality....it just depends upon the style you are trying to accomplish. White ceilings and white trim are a more formal style.

None of the ceilings in my house are white so I cant say I like it or not.

(I will not have any painted trim in my new kitchen. Everything will be very streamlined - cabinets are shaker style but its all wood)

I like white in many different 'forms' , on a wedding gown, christening gown, a crisp new white outfit head to toe in the spring or summer. White does have a beautiful touch to it in MANY ways. My cousins in Italy, their house has WHITE WALLS and white everything throughout. From marble tiles to leather couches, the whole works, of course with painting and window treatments to add splashes of color here and there. The first few times it looks breathtaking, rich and just pure, something about WHITE. But its VERY not me, something Id get sick of wayy to quickly. I see those 'colorful homes' on HGTV and I drool...

For some reason, I just tend to steer away from white in 'creative' areas. To me its like a blank canvas needing some life.

I would paint the ceiling white. It will brighten up the room and make it look bigger.

I have all white ceilings but mainly because the house came that way and the idea of painting the ceilings is not very appealing. BUT I would probably do white since it is a small space.
