Another marriage license question..

I just dont get it...

How long is the license valid? A marriage license is valid for 60 days, beginning the day after it is issued.

Maybe Im just stupid, but I dont get it.

So after 60dys it becomes invalid?? Help me out girls..Im lost

That means you HAVE TO get married, ala by officant before the 60days..after your 'married' he submits the license and you get your marriage certificate..I think that's the gist

let me see...it's like the marriage license is 'STEP 1' and when your officiant signs it and does his thing that day he completes 'STEP 2' then you get your marriage 'certificate' that is final document..

Re: Another marriage license question..

Ok let me try:

The marriage license is a form you get that verifies that you and FH are who you say you are.

It is not a legal proof of marriage until it is signed by:
the minister or person who marrys you (needs to legally be able to do this)
and a signature of two witnesses that verify that you were married, usually your GM and MOH

then, the signed form needs to be mailed to your state office where it is processed and you get a marriage certificate

Re: Another marriage license question..

Your official ceremony and the signatures need to be signed within 60 days of you filing for the license.

And then I think it needs to be mailed out withing 5-10 days of the ceremony for it to be valid

Let's say you get your license today...it doesn't 'take effect' for 24 hours...then you have 60 days from the 'vaild' period to get married. Let's say you do NOT get married within that 60 day timeframe...then you would have to apply for a license again...and pay $40 again.

This piece of paper just says you are ALLOWED to get married...then it is signed, handed in to NYS and they issue your official document that you must show for name changes, etc....hope i am making sense...i am off to work out now

So right now I am 69dys away from my wedding day..so once I hit 60dys I am allowed to go get that paper stating that I am allowed to get married correct??? and then after the ceremony it gets submitted and my actual license gets mailed to me..correct?

Yes. Or maybe in 59 days, you don't want to get it and argue over whether than 24 hours 'counts' or not! But it's pretty unlikely anyway that you'd be cutting it that close.

And, BTW, after the thread re: marriage licenses and birth certificates last weekend, I ordered myself a new birth certificate since I have no idea where mine is. I was born in Queens, so I looked up the NYC info. I ordered it online on Sunday evening, paid the extra rush fee, and I had it on Wednesday. OK, it cost me a bit for the rush, but I have it now. They said it would be 10-25 days without the rush, and I don't have that time. If you do, and you need one, order it now!

I have a question now that you bring up the birth cert (prob a dumb question)... when we bring it, do they have to hold on to it, or they just look at it and give it back??
