Another pre-ttc question

we're not really ttc, but i still want my body to be ready for when we are (which i hope is soon). anyway, i love these boards b/c i am learning so much and have a question for you ladies.

i can't swallow pills...i know, i'm a baby. so i have been taking flintstones. dh thinks i am such a dork, which i am, but that is besides the point. i am doing this b/c i want to increase folic acid and also get my b-vitamins b/c i am also a vegetarian. so my question is this...for how long do you need to have to folic acid in your body? in other words, how long should you be upping the folic acid intake before it can do what it is it is supposed to do? if 2 vits give me 800 mcg, which is double the rda, how long do i take them for until it is considered 'safe or healthy'? make sense? and when the time does come and i'm pg, what vitamin options are there?

before TTC and while TTC you should be taking 400 mcg of folic acid, you don't up it to 800 until you actually ARE PG. It's good to take a multivitamin regardless of TTC or not....your body needs the vitamins and minerals. There is no 'safe' amount of folic acid before you should TTC....I don't think the body stores it like a reserve, it's a matter of making sure they body has it on a regular basis.

After becoming PG, many women continue with the Flinstones because the prenatal pills the Dr prescribes often makes one naseaous (sp?). I know there are gummi type multi vitamins also and Viactiv (the company that makes the chocolate chews for calcium) just put out a multivitamin formula! It's like eating a starburst...same consistency!

Re: Another pre-ttc question

FYI- I was on a large folic acid supplement in early pregnancy due to family history. Folic acid pills are the tiniest pills I've ever seen. Much smaller than most things you swallow after chewing. You may want to take a look at them if you are worried about your intake, I promise they aren't at all scary!
