...people who sit on the computer at work and answer emails, talk on message boards and in chat rooms. Do you consider this stealing?

Re: Another provocative Q: What do you think of....
when they are doing it all day & not allowing their work to be done - yes! but in the same token, it's the responsibility of the company to monitor what is going on!!!

I think if people get their work done first and then go on line I dont see a problem. BUT if the person has a pile of work that needs to be done and is on the computer all day then I think an individuals boss needs to step in on the situation.

Re: Another provocative Q: What do you think of....
Elizabeth, this is a really good question. I would have to say that it depends on the company's policy with regard to computer and internet use. I have worked for a company which allowed you to use it whenever you wanted and also for one which had a very specific and rigid policy against use except on personal time (lunch or breaks). I would have to say that if you are on the honor system and you are on the computer and not getting your work done, then yes you are stealing. After all the company is paying you to do your work. If you work for the company which has the more rigid policy and you are abusing (on during work time) then you are also stealing. I actually had to terminate one of the people who worked for me due to constant abuse of the internet. HR had a form which each employee was required to sign, that stated the rules and regulations regarding internet and email use. This person knew that if he continued to abuse the system he could lose his job, but he kept doing it anyway.

First and foremost - its all about getting work done. If you are not getting your work done for whatever reason - be it internet use, walks around the block or just plain inability - you are stealing. A company pays you for a service...if you cant provide it, you do not deserve the paycheck.
Asumming the work is done, I think it depends on how you are paid.
If you are paid by the HOUR and spend an hour online, then you are stealing that $$ in principle.
But if you work in a job like mine its a bit different. When I have to be at work at 7AM and work until 7PM, I do not get an extra cent. When I have to travel and need to spend an entire week away, I dont see a dime more in my paycheck. If they can use MY unpaid time without paying me, then I think I can use 'paid' time for my purposes is only fair right?

I like that viewpoint Stef.
SO TRUE !
well I have to say, even though I didnt see an extra dime in my paycheck, the good perks were the 'expensing EVERYTHING from soup to nuts ' and the bonus was always decent
But otherwise, I have to agree. they all look out for THEIR wallets, so we have to look out for ours
Re: Another provocative Q: What do you think of....
a lot of companies have 'benefits' to make their employees happy...ie more productive...if surfing the internet makes someone happy and more productive...I say let them do it...

I had several bosses that were totally ok with internet surfing during lunch hour and 'mental health' break times, lol.
Because when we worked, we WORKED.

Re: Another provocative Q: What do you think of....
I think this question is so funny, because here I sit at work online in a message board...but I don't have any work to do at the moment, so I don't think I'm doing anything wrong. If it interfered with my work production, that would be another story. Besides, my boss checks his email 4000000 times a day...

I agree that those of us who don't have enough work to fill the day are doing nothing wrong by surfing to pass the down time.
