Another quick question for teachers....

...do you have to take the Certification exam BEFORE you apply for certification??

When I got certified in MA, I did not need to have the test to apply. You can get it started I believe before you take the test and then have the results sent to Boces.

I took it before I was certified. I think it was part of my certification requirements, but I got my cert as an undergrad. It may be different

You cannot get a provisional certificate without taking the LAST and the ATS-W exams. I don't know if you can start the application process before taking these exams. I imagine that you can't only because if you fail one of these exams (which I know you won't, but it has happened to teachers in NYC), then you would be ineligible for certification.

Just like Julybaby said...you need to take the exams in order to get certifies. You also need Student Teaching as well in order to qualify, you also need to take 2 workshops:
Child Abuse
Violence Prevention
I also believe, they are now requiring that you get fingerprinted.
This is for your provisional cert.

I did a bit of reading up on the application from the website, and it does say I would need the exams first, but student teaching might not be necessary. I am going to have my transcript evaluated, and I may have enough work/life experience to be exempt....

We'll see!

Thanks ladies!!!

you definitely need the first 2 tests...to get even the C of Q...then you get the provisional after you start actual teaching...

although you can get a letter from your school saying that you meet all the requirements and that may be OK for a school

Definitely look into using work experience in lieu of student teaching. They RARELY make the exemption, but it's definitely worth a shot.

you can apply without taking the tests. if you apply at a regional office, the person in charge of certification will review your application and list what you need to do in order to get certified. if you are in nassau, the woman's name is barbara mescall, and she is in the nassau boces in garden city.

good point groovy!! you CAN apply...but won't get your certificate...

in regards to work/life experience...my sister was a photographer for 8 years..and then went to be an art teacher...while she did have to student teach, she was able to get her district to put her on a higher step (pay scale) which I didn't know that you could do...

a way to negotiate salary!!
