I am very worried because I am moving back to LI in the end of June to look for a job as a music teacher, but with all of these cuts, I am not so sure I will find a job. Not to mention that it makes me so sad that music is being cut. Why is it not an important part of our education system? I am just so mad about that. ARGH!

I agree with you! I think anytime they cut anything from the schools it is wrong. When they do that they are denying a child the chance to find the true talent, passion and/or outlet. I mean I STINK in Math, but I loved foreign lanuages and music. I always enjoyed them. How miserable would my day have been if I only had classes like math because of funding.
Good Luck with the job search. I still think we need to make the general music teacher in my school finish her nervous break down so you can come in

Lots of Luck with your job search. I don't know what's gonna be harder now, finding a job on LI or in NYC with all these cuts. It's hard to get a job on LI, and it used to be easy to get on in NYC, but starting in Sept. you can forget about that. Bloomberg just STINKS!!

i AGREE! bLOOMBERG JUST STINKS a$$! He is cutting so much from every district and each district is forced to make cuts. The district that I teach in is struggling with this. They were supposed to open up another middle school since we are so crowded, but now they have to put it off. The parents are not happy with this, but if they don't do it, they will have to cut music, art, etc! It's just too wrong!

My DH predicts that Bloomberg is going to get himself killed with all his changes He is not nice
Rachel - good luck to you. Just send out tons of resumes. I'm sure something will come up.
honestly...when math and science begin to be cut...music is close to being gone...
I know that music is a great experience for a lot of students, but for a school/state to compete in education with the other 49...they need math and reading scores to be high...otherwise people do not want to move there...and housing prices go down and there are less axes...and MORE cuts...
its a very difficult position...but it is the lawmakers of the state...not the schools...they are giving the school very few options...for example...my school district is being cut $10 MILLION...
but there are wealthy districts that will raise taxes to compensate...just get your resume out there...bring it personally to the districts...make it stand out...just off the top of my head...print it on music paper...or put a light staff in the background
good luck!

I am not saying that they should cut math or science-- sorry if it sound that way. What I mean though is music and art are just as important and they should cut elsewhere. For example We have:
All of these people are earning close to if not more than 6 figures (except for the last one), I personally see a lot of money that could be cut right there! I would say there are about 7 very NON-NEEDED jobs right there! Especially since 8 of these positions were created in the last year I really think they could save a lot of money but cutting down on non- needed positions. JMHO

Re: Another Teacher Post...I'm worried....
well put swags! I also have to add that our district does stupid things like buys new spelling series, science, reading, etc. that is only used for a very few years and then no one uses them and the district buys new ones again! They really need to research what they buy into better and ask us! I know they have committees for this, but they keep making these same stupid mistakes! Also, Special ed, what I teach, has decided to take away any one on one aids for every child (unless it's a physical reason- can't walk on own etc) and put them in BOCES- which costs more to the district than to have the one on one! W T F ? They say that if a student needs a one on one, they are not ready for a 12:1:1 setting in a public school!
Someone better remove these jack a$$es from their positions and put someone in there who will do something right. All the Superintendents see are how much they are making and screw the rest of the district!
youre right...they should think about cutting higher up...although I don't think our district has many to spare...1 super...and 3 asst...thats it...
unfortunately what gets cut...is sports and extra activities...and those are activities that change kids lives...
kelly...you should write a grant to get money to get a reading committee started...and you guys could meet over the summer (getting paid with the grant money) and decide on the best reading, etc books!!

I know the pay isn't as good, but what about looking at private schools? They seem less likely to cut music programs. I know the Ross School has an excellent music program.

Rachel, I am in the same boat as you! I am a new teacher (elementary) without a permanent teaching job and none on the horizon. My resume has been sent to over 47 districts, and still no bites. I have heard that if there is any hiring to be done at all, it will be more than likely done after May. Many districts are not even replacing retirees, they are just enlarging classes! It is so brutal and depressing for new teachers now!
