Hey girls..i used to be a teacher but quit 7 years ago...my certification expired but i have since finished grad school and passed the cst and have re-applied for my certification. OK..so my question is, i know that you have to take professional development or courses in order to keep your certification now...can i take classes anywhere? What type of classes do i have to take? Can i just go to Queensborough and take classes I enjoy, like maybe a language class or painting or something? I dont know where i have to go or how to document any of this stuff ...help me..i dont want to lose my certification again!! (oh, and i am not in the teaching profession now either but just want to keep everything updated so that i can keep my options open in case i do go back) thanks

Re: another TEACHING question
I'm sorry...I'm a teacher but I'm not sure which classes or where you have to take them but could you check the NYS Dept of Education website??
P.S. Now that I am thinking... I haven't had to take any classes to keep my certification. I have permanent certification in elementary eduaction. I've been teaching for 15 years and was never told that I had to. I'm not sure where you received that infor mation but I would check it out. GL!!!!

Re: another TEACHING question
Yes, the requirements changed as of February 2004 if I remember correctly, because I pushed myself to get my degree so I wouldn't have to do the PD credits. I applied and I'm awaiting my permanent cerfication so I know the hassle of the state ed dept.
Since I don't have to do the credits, I'm not sure how to help you, but I know in the UFT newspaper there's always a section in the back that lists all the 'new teacher' info and phone numbers to call for info. They give a checklist as to what you need to do as a new teacher to advance in your certification. There may be some info there that's helpful to you.
Also, are you already teaching right now? You can ask your UFT rep for info, or check the UFT bulletin board at your school (ours is in the teacher's room). They usually have flyers there advertising UFT-approved courses for credits for the 30 above, so they may also have courses for PD.

I wish I knew where to tell you to go to get information as to what type of classes would count for the Professional Cerfitifcation (and yes as the pp mentioned the laws changed and now only professional cerficiation is available. Permanent cerfitication is no longer offered), but perhaps try BOCES? Here is the website to NYS Education Dept which describes the amount of hours you need to maintain your certification as well as other information regarding maintaining your certification. I hope it helps!http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/certificate/index.html
ETA: I noticed you reapplied for certification. Are they going to give you a Professional or make you start out at the Initial Certification? I believe the Initial Certification eventually becomes Professional when all the requirements are met. Then you must take a certain # of PDP hours every 5 years in order to maintain your cerfitication.
