another tipping question

another tipping question

Okay, so I'm confused about the difference between 'gratuity' and a 'service charge'. My contract at the Harrison House includes a 20% 'service charge' (which, when all is said and done, will be about $6000.)

The contract says that the service charged can be used by HH for the compensation of its' employees, including service and non-service personnel and for such other purposes as HH believes to be appropriate.

It goes on to say, however, that a 'service charge is not a gratuity, and such must be taxed according to New York State law.'

So my question- it seems to me like we are already 'tipping' quite a bit on top of what we are paying...but does this really not count as tipping? I don't know what we're supposed to do.

The service charge is supposed to be a charge that is added to the bill for the employees to perfom the necessary services for the day and in preparation for the day, like you're not paying enough already. Like, setting up the tables, cleaning, etc. Unfortunately, the reception sites do not use that for tipping the staff that serves you and your guests the day of the wedding, so usually people tend to provide a tip between $2 and $3 per person to the Maitre'd who then splits that up with the remaining wait staff/ busboys, etc. for the day. I don't know how else to differentiate between the two. Sorry, if that was not much help.
