Just a general question that came up in conversation this weekend:
How many of you have them?
How often?
What do you do to combat them?

thats exactly what brings them on for me too.

Re: Anxiety/Panic Attacks
Ladies, I have to say that I am glad to see that there are sooo many of us suffering from these. To put it into words, they suck. I got my first one 4 years ago at an end of year party. I felt lightheaded and my heart started to pound and this heat came over me. I felt like I was going to pass out. I had several over next few days. I had no idea what was wrong with me. Went to dr. Took cardiogram, holter monitor, and an head MRI. All results were normal. Went to dinner with a girlfriend, got them again and made parents take me to emergency room. They said I was fine. I remebered watching Sopranos and asked the dr. if it could be panic attacks I was suffering from. He said that it was possible. Went to psychiatrist recommended by a friend. Went on Paxil for several weeks and began to feel better. Went to therapist and continued to see her for awhile. Went off meds after a year and then had to go back on. Went on same meds, Paxil. Made me feel really weird and went on Effexor. Went off a year later. Fast forward to right after wedding and needed to go back on. Went off maybe two months later because we wanted to TTC. Throughout this whole time I take Xanax when I need it. Get them every now and then. I try breathing techniques because I don't want to go back on meds because of TTC. Everyone suffering from these I know exactly what you are going through and DON'T let anyone tell you that you can just snap out of it because you can't. You can't help being stressed or what brings them on for you. Sorry if this was sooo long but this is a topic of BIG personal interest to me and I just want everyone to know that they are not alone.

Don't you love when you finally get to the register and they need to get a price check! I can feel my pulse start racing the minute she starts looking for the tag

Re: Anxiety/Panic Attacks
Another question ladies, how is DH when you get these?
When I got my second set of attacks, one year after 1st set, DH and I were supposed to go to California for 10 days. I got the attack bad on a Thursday or Friday night. DH had 2 interviews and a Yankees game the following day. He came to Brooklyn at midnight from S. Merrick to be with me. That was when I actually realized that I was in love with him.
Since then with the attack after the wedding he was supportive. He understood why I needed to go back on the meds and I tried to go off as quickly as I could so htat we could TTC.

Re: Anxiety/Panic Attacks
I've had two in the past year and I had never gotten them prior to that. I think they mainly came about at really stressful times. The only thing that helped me was trying to calm myself down and take deep breaths.

Re: Anxiety/Panic Attacks
My DH is understanding because he would get them .....but rarely. SO he understands how it feels which is very helpful.
BUT i have to say that when i experience these...i like to be alone. People around me, talking to me, annoy me more...

Re: Anxiety/Panic Attacks
I was already on the meds when DH and I met. So, he has never really seen me have a bad attack and doesn't really understand that it's not a psychological thing. My Mother was kind of the same way until I freaked on her in an airport once.

Re: Anxiety/Panic Attacks
I've never had them but my sister suffers from really bad anxiety attacks...she was on medication for awhile. It was scary because the attacks would be so bad and so frequent that eventually other symptoms of depression started to play into it all and it took over her life for a good 9 months...she started to ween herself off the meds bc she didn't want to become addicted to them...she was fine for a good two years...now she says they are coming back...she had a few a couple of weeks ago on the train and when she woke up...it makes me soo upset to see her go through them bc theres nothing I can do for her...

While i do not think it is hereditary, in my family unfortunately my brother, myself and my mother all suffer from anxiety/panick attacks

IMO....and this is just what i think....
I believe for MANY this can be a result of poor coping skills.

JMHO, IMO, I think this is a case of nature and nurture. I know in my family my brother and I were both pushed to succeed academically. We both went to Ivy League schools and did well, but my brother got panic attacks while I did not. I think being in a high stress/Type A house growing up would make someone more prone to internalizing stress, which results in panic attacks...

Exactly the same here. Except i was pushed hard in school and my sister was not. Even though we were siblings growing up in the same house. We were raised VERY differently. We had two different expectations placed on us.
I got the anxiety...not my sister...
So i guess IMO, i do think that anxiety issues are more nature
