Try to go to the library, they have a hershey bar fraction book.
You can also have them break it in half, and then again so they have quarters... then shoe them how 2 quarters equal a half and what else can they do to equal a half blah blah...
Where's the demo? Good luck!!

we don't do fractions for a few weeks yet, but I always use the hershey book, its great!! Last year I had a small class so it was easier, this year I have 31 kids so I am not so sure what I'm gonna do. Good luck with it! I am sure you'll do great!

Good luck! The Hershey Book is great...just make sure there aren't any peanut allergies in the class before you bring in any chocolate. you can also have the students use pattern blocks or the fraction manipulatives to create the fractions on their own. Maybe you can make a little 'work mat' for each student then provide each child with a set of the blocks to make fractions. Tangrams are also a lot of fun for a demo lesson if you get stuck with fractions.

Re: Any 2nd grade teachers out there?
The Hershey Bar and M&M fraction lessons do work well, but some observers do tire of seeing those lessons as demos because they are very overused as demo lessons. I had a few observers tell me, 'Anything but the M&M and/or Hershey lessons please. Show some creativity.' I also know of a few friends who did the M&M and/or Hershey fraction lessons and had the kids get very hyper over it, so be careful. Allergies are also a consideration to take into place. I'm not trying to discourage you from doing this, or stress you out, but I felt the need to tell you my past experiences with this. With that being said, I've done the lesson myself and it was a success, but I'm happy I used others for my demos. I did a unit on fractions with my third graders and a few fraction lessons with my first graders. I'll be more than happy to share them with you if you'd like (I'll email them to you.) I did use overhead manipulatives in many of them though, so if you don't have access to them, they may not be useful. What concept are you trying to introduce (addition, subraction?) Good luck!
