gowns - a must have. they are open on the bottom for easy changing and are cotton for comfort - also have hand coverings....I have maybe 8 of these
RADIO IN THE NURSERY - I really believe this is 100% necessary. I don't know if it's for the sanity of mother or child, but having a cd player /radio in there makes all the difference. I can listen to Howard in the morning during the week from 6 am (one of my feeding times), AM Radio in the wee hours of the morning, we listen to Baby Einstein now, Sting, Billy Joel...sometimes just 106.7. I really think it soothes her and makes her room somewhere that is calming.
Costco wipes (turned on by the girls here on liweddings! thanks!) or Pampers Sensitive Touch wipes.
A&D Ointment or Balmex
Lots of washcloths. I find I am always hunting those things down. If you are feeding formula you need burp cloths. More than I realized.
For us the pacifier is crucial. I just ordered a cannister of them - (it's a special kind they used in the NICU in the hospital - not available in stores) I don't know if you are planning on allowing for pacifiers but I can tell you if he/she gets one in the hospital you'd better have a supply at home!
Newborn swaddler diapers
One good warm comforting blanket that you can depend on.
Detergent - Dreft
If breastfeeding - boobie pads. Make sure to not get the ones with plastic liners. I think Gerber is the all cottony one for disposable. I really like the ones that you wash though. More comfortable. And nursing bras. Have them ready - you'll need them immediately.
Diaper Bag or a nice big tote bag
Some type of swing device. It's not a guarantee but a welcome reprieve from a crying baby if yours likes it.
Mobile for the crib. Sophie doesn't sleep in her crib yet but loves to lay there for a few minutes and watch the mobile.
(What you DO NOT NEED NOW:
exersaucer, bouncy seat, highchair, booster seat...all these things I got at my shower, and I returned a lot of it because I would rather buy them later when I need them and use the credits towards diapers and stuff now. Sometimes I think all these 'things' like bouncy seats and stuff like that just offer too much stimulation in a way. I can't imagine my baby needs to kick at spots on a seat to make lights blink and things rattle around. I think we can achieve that with good old creativity! JMO)
Really Sue, I have found that all I need is a blanket, some bottles, a pot to sterilize stuff in, diapers, wipes and lotion for the hiney. Gowns, onesie undershirts and a few pairs of socks. Car seat, stroller (although we haven't even gone anywhere)...and that is really it. She doesn't seem to want for anything at 4 weeks besides mommy and daddy to hold her and be there when she cries.
