Is this a new network or are you trying to set it up for the first time?

Re: Any computer people want to help me fix my network?

This is how it got messed up. I had a network set up, but then I got a new computer. My old computer was the main computer. When I got this one I just plugged it in to the router and it went online but it is not on the network. I did the set up the network wizard and when I try to select 'This computer connects directly to the internet. The other comp. are connected through this comp.' It says other computers cannot connect through this computer.
When I set it up the other way, the only way it will let me, pretending that this comp. connects through another computer, it says it is finished but there is still no other computers in the network. Am I missing something?

Do you have a hub?

Re: Any computer people want to help me fix my network?

I don't know what a hub is...
I have a modem and a linksys router that both computers are plugged into.
The network worked with my old computer and everything was set up the same way. Therefore I think it is one of the settings on this new computer that must be off.

Re: Any computer people want to help me fix my network?

In this case...a hub and router is the same thing.

Can you plug your new computer directly into your internet connection (cable modem/dsl) whatever...can you get on the internet that way?

You might need to get your manual out for your lyncsys thing and reprogram it to read the new computer.

Re: Any computer people want to help me fix my network?

Leave the network cable plugged directly into the modem...and you reset the modem...leave it off for 30 seconds and turn it back on...

Who do you have for service? You can also try calling customer support...if it's a new computer, they will help you get it connected to the internet...

XP makes some things easier as it recognizes many devices automatically...

i have an XP machine talking to a windows2000 machine. i can access the 2000 machine from the XP one, but have yet to figure out how to do it the other way around. a friend had a similar problem, he set it up fine with XP home edition, but ran into the same problem with XP professional some setting somewhere we have yet to find…

Re: Any computer people want to help me fix my network?

Both computers should be set to the 'this computer connects to the internet through another computer or residential gateway'

The router should do the rest for you - oh - in the router settings (I know with my router, which is probably similar, you have to go into internet explorer, and type in 192.168.1.1 for the address - the instructions should tell you how) - DCHP server has to be enabled.

Are you trying to get the computers on the internet, or trying to share files? Do either of the computers have internet access? To share files, you have to right click on each folder you want to share, select file and printer sharing and set that up seperately.

Re: Any computer people want to help me fix my network?

OH>>>I had the exact same prob....both can connect to the net but cannot share right? You need to right click on the 'local area connection' in the control panel network connections. Click on the sadvanced tab and turn off (uncheck)the firewall that XP has built in. I could not connect my 2 computers till I did that. XP tries so had to be user friendly but sometimes all those 'wizards' just make things worse. Let me know if this works!

i can see and access the XP machine from my 2000 one, however from the XP one, when i attempt to access the 2000 box, it prompts me with a login and password. i enter in the information (even went so far to create the same user profile on each box) and it still refuses access. it is so bizarre. since i am able to access one way and have an A/B switch as well, i decided to give up on the problem for now...

i'll check my firewall settings when i get home - thanks!
