i'm having an issue with our first dance. i was a professional dancer and i really can't imagine just swaying back and forth for an entire song, but there is NO way my FH would go for an entire choreographed song. he said he wants to be thinking about us and our wedding day, not some dance moves.
so my question is, do you think it would be weird if somewhere in the middle of the song we had a couple counts of 8 where we did some 'moves'. at least i get to 'dance' a litte and FH only has a few seconds to worry about?
or would that just look completely weird??

Re: any dancers in here?? first dance ??
I AM A DANCER/DANCE INSTRUCTOR-MY FH IS DEFINATELY NOT A NATURAL DANCER, AT ALL!!! WE HAVE DECIDED TO NOT DO A CHOREOGRAPHED ROUTINE (I FEEL AS THOUGH MOST OF THE TIME THE MEN LOOK AWKWARD-YOU CAN TELL THEY ARE COUNTING AND THINKING TOO MUCH )-INSTEAD WE WILL DANCE FOR A SMALL PORTION OF THE SONG AND THEN HAVE THE BAND INVITE GUESTS TO JOIN US. I FEEL LIKE THIS WAY AT LEAST WE WONT BORE EVERYONE TO DEATH WITH THE SWAYING BACK AND FORTH.

FH and I are taking professional lessons right now.... our first dance is NOT traditional and FH has no dance background whatsoever but I have to say he is doing REALLY well. Surprisingly so, in fact.
If you don't want a 100% choreographed routine but want to just know a few moves, maybe just sign up for 1 or 2 private lessons and they can show you a few steps that will work with your first song. That way you can incorporate those without the whole thing looking too rehearsed.

I wanted to do the whole 'bust a move' deal in the middle. I dance and FH 'thinks' hes Usher.. LOL So it wouldn't look bad, but hes alittle weird on doing it.
So we decided on dancing to our song then have it break into Suavemente or something along that tempo so we can break out in some merengue. Then we'll go back into the slow dance

FH is not a dancer by any means so we took a few lessons. We're just going to do a nightclub fox trot to our song... nothing fancy but at least it won't look like swaying back and forth lol But what you're describing sounds like it would be fine! Especially if he doesn't want to worry about dancing for the entire song!

ex pro dancer also as my FH says, he has trouble walking, so can't even think about dancing and i would love to teach him, but he is very stubborn i gave up will just sway....
but i think you will not look stupid if you will do few choreographed moves in the middle... Just dotn do anything very complicated
good luck

I know what you mean because I have a dance background and really wanted to do a fun first dance. However, a few years back my fiance got us ballroom dance lessons and after that experience I'm willing to just sway. I can dance on my own later in the evening.

i know that feeling.
I like the idea of just a few counts 8 choreographed. It's not the whole thing and just a few seconds basically. Just make sure you lead and FH is ok with that lol.
that's my biggest problem. I can't not lead.

dancer/choreographer here too!!!
Surprisingly enough FH does want to learn a little so we're not just swaying. I of course would love a whole choreographed routine- like you. You can try chorographing the count of 8 in the begining to get everyones attention and then go in to the swaying. You can keep it intresting by having him twirl you around here and there. i like to break out my disney princess movies (cinderella, sleeping beauty, etc) and watch how they waltz with the princes. when we're cooking together in the kitchen, FH loves to grab me and practice waltzing like that. Good Luck!
