Any Fairhaven Residents?

REpost

I woke up this morning with a headache freezing, not I don't want to move cold, but frozen to the bone. sturned the water on in the Shower, ice cold. After being on hold / my Leasing office emergency linwe for 34 minutes, a peaseent woman came back to tell me, they'rre having a problem w/ getting power to the boiler, their maintance man can't fix it, so they are waiting for a repair man.

My apartment isn't the only one affected by this,, They have been recieveing calls since 6am. and they don't have a better plan,.

I tell her it's 21 degrees in here, to just like it is out side, we have no heat, my radiator is so cold, I need to shower to go to work, the water is ice cold what am I supposed to do? Her reply, well the Maintance staff is waiting for the repair men, .

So I'm so cold, and I'm of to work w/o showering , all gross

That stinkies!

Which fairhaven are you at, there is one right down the block from me.

My management company is worse... 1 day it will be about 120 degrees NO JOKE, I have the windows wide open on the coldest days of the years walking around in a tank and undies sweating to death, and the next day on the next coldest day of the year, NO HEAT... ***

It doesn't take Einstein to work a freaking heater!

So sorry you are so cold!

LOL--I used to live at the Woodbury Fairhaven and they are soooooo very incompetent sometimes! I mean, the apts. are NOT cheap, and if they're going to charge that much for rent, they should be more efficient!

usually it's like a sauna, so we sleep in summer gear. w/ the window cracked & the fan on....

Well According to my leasing Manager it'll be fixed when it's fixed, not really a priority,

Anyone know my rights as a renter?

OMG you hit a nerve here. Don't even get me started on Fairhaven. I lived in one of their apt's on Old Country Road in Mineola. Let's just say the cold was the LEAST of my problems. I've seen smaller cockroaches in the caribbean!!
There would be at least one of those gigantic water bugs (polite name for an enourmous cockroach) in my bathroom or bedroom floor nearly every morning. I've lived in Manhattan and didn't have that kind of problem. Anyway I tolerated it for a year and got the hell out of there. This was back in 2000 so maybe it's gotten better but I sill have nightmares of that place!!!

Also let me mention that I am a VERY clean person and you can eat off the floors of my home. It's really poor management on their part.

NO heat in the winter is creating hazardous living conditions. They are in breach of contract . They don't have to give you AC but heat is considered a necessity.

I was looking in tenets rights on the housing authorit web site. It doesn't say how long but it does state:
'Contact the Town’s Building Inspector (also called a Code Enforcement Inspector), the Fire Marshall or the County’s Department of Health (for things like no heat, cesspool backup, and lead paint issues) to look at the problem.'

If you have no heat and they're NOT trying to fix it, you have a problem... Sounds to me like they are at least trying to fix the problem. I'm sorry, but it's not as if this has been going on for days or weeks on end -- That's what the cited housing regulations are getting at. Things break - if they are taking steps to fix the problem, that's the best they can do. I'm so sorry you're stuck in the cold, but it has only been about 8 hours. Give them time to get someone out to fix it. I'm sure there are plenty of other homes / businesses that need work done to repair their heat today, you may have to be patient.

Obviously, it wasn't a simple enough problem for the maintenance person to fix, so a contractor is being brought in.

They cannot control whether or not the boiler broke. If they aren't taking steps to fix the problem or aren't communicating what is going on to the tenants, then definitely complain about that... but give them some time to fix the problem. It may be more complicated and not able to be resolved in a couple of hours. Ask them if they can assure you when it will be back on. Until then, go visit family or friends to stay warm! Don't let yourself get sick because of this!

I hope it gets fixed quickly... but I wouldn't bash them JUST because the boiler broke. That's not their fault necessarily. If they are handling it poorly, that's one thing... but they cannot control that it broke or how long it'll take the repairman to fix it.
